Regarding your pics going black like that, I have seen that happen before when using the gallery, but when I back out of the app and go back, they are usually there and just fine.
Have you tried going back and seeing if they are ok now?
Another app I use with pics is named, Quickpic. Might try downloading it and see if it finds your pics.
Hope you didn't lose your pics. I don't know why it goes black like that, but mine have always shown back up.
