Unless there's something specific with this particular iteration of Android on the G5, I can't think of any other reasons why it's not letting you connect.

At this point you might try connecting your phone to a different USB port on your laptop (if you have that option.) I know there have been issues with USB3 ports in the past. You could try a different PC.

If none of those solutions works, you might consider an app like Airdroid which will let you transfer files wirelessly.

I've got a G6 running Android 7.0, the G5 probably only has Android 6.x so the menus will look a little different. The only reason I can think why MTP is not an option is that the phone doesn't detect it when plugged in, which is what led me to suggest a different cable or USB port.
 
Not a permanent fix but you could use that to transfer files. This proves that you have at least some access to your phone from PC. Try going to developer options and change the type of connection from there(charging/mtp)
