Help Pin inside charger port bent, wont charge

I only have chargers that I purchased from Verizon. Havent been abusing it (how the heck would you??), and I guess I need to swap it somehow for a "new" one.

Bought it in June, not sure if it's still on warranty, or if it's just on the insurance now.

Anyway, it's a rooted device, and if the mini usb port wont work for charger, I assume it wont work for my computer either. Any issues with that exchange? The issue is in no way software related, and is only with the usb port.

:( Regardless of the condition of the phone if it is an issue with the charging port VZW will not accept it as a warranty replacement, so you will need to call the insurance, this is a form of physical damage.

You are correct you wouldn't be able to unroot with a bad USB port but using the insurance on a rooted phone shouldn't matter. If you are worried they will say something then you can always flash the stock rooted rom and uninstall superuser then they would have to boot into hboot to see that the bootloader is s-off but like I said it shouldn't matter if you are rooted or not.

You could buy an external battery charger and use it then swap out batteries but if you go that way you could end up in a situation where you are forced to call the insurance company if you do something that requires ADB to fix as you would be unable to use ADB.

If you are a do it yourself kinda person you could always try to bend the pin back but I think that wouldn't be the best idea personally (for me at least since I failed to fix USB ports on other phones by trying that method)

Lame sauce. I dont see how I could possibly be blamed for breaking that. Am I shoving stuff in there just for the hell of it? Sigh.

Thanks for the advice!

I agree with you on that. I think it should be covered by warraty as well. I think the problem is not all chargers are made equal and there is no way to prove you only used the OEM charger. So they think that one time you used that charger from your old envy2 it caused it to break (okay I am just guessing here)

The external charger is the cheaper way to go by far but there may be a time that you need to use ADB for some reason or just want to transfer files to your CPU without resorting to a cloud service or wifi explorer. I wish I could have provided better news.

Just a thought, you may want to try to connect it to your CPU to see if it registers, if it does you could just have a bad battery.

Yeah I tried and it doesnt work. I can look into the usb port and see the one pin bent up. the usb going into it doesnt "feel" right either. So it's definitely the port.

REALLY not looking forward to paying the deductible only to get a used phone that'll probably be crap.

Yeah deductible suck...

On a positive note...
Recently the phones people have been getting from both warranty and insurance replacements have been better. I think most the bad phones that were circulating have been weeded out, remember if you use the insurance you have *I believe* 14 days from when you receive the new phone to return it for defects. So be sure to put it thru the ringer for the first few days you have it to make sure it is acceptable to you, if you have any issues with it call them back and have them send you another one ASAP.

phone still has like 12% left. Was gonna go by the Verizon Store anyway just in case. Should I make it die first so they cant see it's rooted? Would they make any kind of mark on my record?

What rom are you using? If it is anything other than stock they will likely know it is rooted about the time they put a working battery in it and see it boot up. So going before it dies may be a better idea if you aren't running stock, if you are running stock it shouldn't be a problem

Soon as I got your msg, I ran over to the store, with 3% left.

Showed them the bent pins/messed up port. They are shipping me a new one for free under warranty! wahoowa!

of course it will be a refurb, but at least I didnt have to pay for it. In the meantime, I got a dock that also charges batteries, and am using that to get me to late thursday night, and will be useful besides.

Thanks for your help!

I am glad you are getting a new phone.

Okay now VZW is starting to annoy me. I've know several people to get turned down for warranty replacements for this exact same issues (myself even).

If at all possible I suggest you unroot the phone prior to sending it in. If you used revolutionary then you won't be able to. If you can't unroot then I would put the GB OTA rom on the phone at least and remove the SU app.

And finally no thanks is needed here, I almost cost you $100 :o

lot of it depends on the rep / tech you talk to, in my experience. As en ex-tech, it was a judgement call for us, depending on the severity of the damage. Something that was obviously abused, or jamming a charger in upside down or sideways, wouldn't be under warranty. But we had a lot of 18-pin LG charging ports that had broken loose, that we still replaced. And a Micro is really hard to mess up "a little bit". It'd either be mangled from obvious neglect, or in this case, something just weirdly uncommon but still replaceable as kind of a "that's really strange, it shouldn't do that" moment. But a lot of it does come down to a judgement call based on what they feel the severity is.

Just my two bits on it :)

Either way, glad it's getting replaced for you! Would definately charge up the battery in the new phone, and back-up your old one as best as possible!

How do I get it to accept the GB OTA? I'm rooted with a Froyo BAMF rom. When I tell it to check for an OTA, it says none are available.
