Pirates & Traders

I'm the one who is thankful for having friendly, interactive fans. ;)

The pricing is set based on the premise that those who buy it are interested in supporting the development of the game; P&T is a niche products, so I wouldn't sell tens of thousands of copies even if I priced it at $1. This is also the reason why I don't have a huge gap in features between the Gold! version and the regular free version, though there will probably be a bit extra Gold! goodies with version 1.5.0.

Thanks.

Unfortunately the new version has had a good deal more bugs than I had anticipated, and although I have fixed the worst of them, there are still a few annoying ones in the game. Trying to get them fixed as fast as possible, after which I'll be adding a lot of new features.

Very good game, got some bugs/questions...

Jobs seem to have a deadline of the current date, so are impossible to complete (least the last few I have looked at have).

Keep getting attacked by privateers of nations I'm friendly with, French Commodore, respected - and one of their privateers shoots up my ship! He fired first, I didn't even fire back, just kept pressing 'distance'. Is this intentional?

What effects do your rank have when in a friendly port of that nation? Prices of ship upgrades?

What version of the game are you playing? I've heard about people having this bug with old versions of the game, but the entire mission/story module has been rebuilt for version 2.0, so I'm very surprised to hear of this again.

Yes. "Privateers" are really just pirates currently. I plan to change this in a future version, so that there is a clear differentiating between the two.

Among other things. This should be explained in the help file in the governor view.

Version 2.0.9 is now available on the Android Market. The Amazon market will hopefully receive its update later this week.

The two things I've noticed are:

A couple of times when getting a job either the person's name or the job location were a variable name.

Also when getting a job, if I demand double the fee, the next screen says we bargained more and agreed on a new price, which is the same as the original price. Am I just a bad negotiator?

Overall I love the game, though the new update seems to make it harder at the start. I've started saving quite often so I can reload when I die.

Ok, got the latest and it does look like those are fixed. Very nice.

Now, on to the new. :( I seized a Spanish Trade Galleon but my ship's picture didn't change until I exited and reloaded. Also, the ship had improved sails, 6/6. This showed up correctly in the shipyard and when encountering another ship. However, on the ship information page it showed 4/4.

And, a question. If a port lets me in, but won't let me talk to the governor, is there any way to get a pardon for whatever I did? I think all I did was fight off a privateer that attacked me.

Minor bug - it was showing rigging for sails in the status view. Will be fixed in the next version.

Fighting off a privateer should not have any effect (though I'll check just to be sure).

The Governor being closed off is a bug. Will also be fixed in the next version.

Thanks for all the great feedback and apologies for all the bugs.

Have the latest and it's solid as usual. Just a couple things I've found so far. The first is just my grammer police nature. In a dialog about being bored at the governor's ball, it says tit-bits of info, rather than tid-bits. Kinda funny actually.

The second is a little bigger. I gained a skill point and went in to spend it. I accidently tapped on a skill that cost two points. It gave me the skill and set my available skill points to -1.

Game is still awsome, even though it can be pretty tough early on. Keep up the great work.

Hi strategy,

You have made a very good game and I thank you for keeping it free, even after all this time.

I first got your game in the middle of last year and had hours of fun with it. After not playing it for a while I have just started to play it again. The new look and new features are great. However, I must admit I find it very hard to play for more than 20 mins at a time as the game has just become too difficult. It has gone from being a game where one could progress rapidly (possibly the game used to be too easy) to being too difficult to get past that initial pirate stage within a reasonable amount of time. Some issues with the new version I have are:

- Everytime I upgrade my ship I lose a massive portion of cargo space so cannot make money this way
- The story stage at the begining of the game seems to get inconsitent results
-It is impossible to sneak contraband into Spanish and Dutch ports so there is no chance of making money here (even if you have the right attributes to start with)

This results in me trying to scrape by doing jobs for people which is not fun! Admitedly I haven't gone past playing for more than an hour (because I get bored!) so the game could get more interesting for me. However I now struggle to get enjoyment out of the game and just wish a difficulty level somewhere between the newer version and the present one could be found!

I still think you have done an impressive thing by releasing this game and upkeeping it for so long.

Thanks for the feedback.

The next major upgrade (2.2.x) will include some major re-balancing of the ship items. The issue has a discussion thread on my forums. Feel free to contribute with any further opinions you have about that there.

- The story stage at the begining of the game seems to get inconsitent results

Hmm... in what way? If you select the same choices each time (and same aptitude), you should get the same character every time. Aptitude does affect what options you have available, though.

-It is impossible to sneak contraband into Spanish and Dutch ports so there is no chance of making money here (even if you have the right attributes to start with)

Sounds like you may be running on an older version of the game. The latest versions should have fixed this bug so that both smuggling and bribery works correctly.

I realize that the new version can seem a deal harder than the old one, and it's something I'm definitely looking to fix. Part of the problem has been some bugs which made the game harder (e.g., the smuggling thing), but apart from that, it's a matter of identifying the issues that make the new version harder, and tweaking those.

Apprentice level is supposed to be easy and allow the player to pretty much "surf" through the game and experience the content. Buccaneer is supposed to be the "default" level, while Swashbuckler is supposed to be merciless. There is still some distance to go before the game balance is quite right.

I just tried the game for the first time on my new Rezound. The first thing I noticed was that on the map screen, all of the ports are shifted North of where they should be. I think the resolution is 1280x720, but I don't remember for sure at the moment. I actually have several apps that are weird with this HD screen.

I'll keep playing to see if anything else is weird.

Sounds odd. I don't see that issue in the emulator. If you can get a screenshot of that, it would be helpful. Otherwise it will have to wait until I can (hopefully soon) get my hands on the Galaxy Nexus.

I'll see what I can do. Gotta figure out how to do it without being rooted. I may just use another camera.

OK, I finally got around to getting a couple pictures of the screen on my Rezound. Here they are. Hope it helps resolve the issue.

Thanks. That is very obviously a case of the screen DPI setting being something different from what the app is picking up. I wonder if the Rezound is set up as an XHDPI screen (i.e., extra-high density). I don't know of any phones that are, but with that screen, it might be the case. I haven't tested that, because I haven't seen any devices before which have had that setting. The app really should handle it, but of course you never know... I'll look into it. I'm hoping to get hold of a Galaxy Nexus soon, so with any luck I can test the issue myself with a real phone.

Incidentally, Version 2.2.1 is out now. It includes some significant tweaking of the ship improvement gold and cargo space costs.

Sounds good. Hope you can find a fix. I'm suffering withdrawal. ;)

Just checked - it's definitely XHDPI as it has 342 PPI (default XHDPI is 320 ... the iPhone's "retina" display is 396). So it is almost certainly something to do with that. Unfortunately the Android emulator doesn't really like running in XHDPI mode (i.e., it crashes when trying to set up with these parameters). I'll see if I can find a workaround to the emulator issue, but if not, I probably won't have a chance to do anything with this until I get that Galaxy Nexus (which should be in 2 weeks if the vendors are to be trusted, but this being december... probably not).

So first off great game I play it on my e reader
Bug: when ever I battle a boat it sais what type of boat it is like I found a merchantman but its a privateer but its different.

Idea: You shoul be allowed to have as many as two boats

Bug: I can't get into tortuga

Hi, I have an HTC EVO4G, and had been playing the Pirates and Traders Game for a few weeks now with occassional Force Close issues. I recently Auto Retried from and game and Decided to get the Gold version. So I went to down load it and it hung up. I figured maybe still haveing the original game on my phone maybe confussing the download so I deleted it. then I tried to download the Gold version again. but now I cannot find either Pirates and Traders or the Gold version in the Android Market. Am I have Evo Issues or is the game still on the market? if not, WHat Happened? if it is, why isnt it showing up on my Evo? Sincerely,
