Accessories Played with Droid X Car mount today...

I hadn't had a chance to play with the Car Mount with the new DroidX until today. I really hoped that I'd be able to use the Camcorder mode to record in front of my vehicle. I have a TomTom Mount for my (now my wife's) iPhone 3GS and the mount blocked the camera so it wasn't usable to record forward.

I have a Jeep and enjoy offroading and there are times that I'd like video evidence of some of the cool stuff that we come across, up and over and through at times. I have friends with FlipMino's and other camera mounts and I'm jeolous of the footage they get sometimes.

It took a bit to position the suction cup mount and mounting arm so that they didn't appear in the frame. Eventually I got something that worked. I got some glare off the windshield, but that is to be expected (especially with the top and doors off the Jeep on a bright and sunny day).

Overall I'm pretty happy with the results with the initial testing (not offroad, just around town). I have a Cig Lighter Charger on the way so that will hopefully help with the charging (although it appears that some are having issues with Car Dock Charging).

We'll see how "sturdy" the mount is when we start getting some bumps and rougher offroading, but that will be the next test.

Thanks, I like it!

I am trying to talk my wife into letting me get the green Rubicon Unlimited that has the 4 doors. I had the 2 door Unlimited in 05, but traded it in on a car. That was the worst mistake ever. When I got my Droid X, she said that is my last toy for a while, but I am hoping to convince her we "Need" the Jeep.

worst jeep video ever, you didnt even leave the pavement! :p

i was going to hack up the windshield mount... but after seeing this vid, im glad i didnt mod it yet!

gonna have to find some time to quit modding the phone and the new house and get out and wheel some vids!

Your right, I should be ashamed... Hoping to do the Rubicon Trail in September, so will make sure I have my DroidX Car mount dialed in before then and give it a few "real" off-road test runs before that.

Havn't been out in a couple months...redoing my front end and shocks and then get busy with work and summer and kids and stuff.

nice. RE long arm?

i have a 3" full craption lift. i want to upgrade to either 3.5 or 5.5 rock crawler long arm... dont see that happening any time soon though. :(

So the mount was above, or down, so that it was out of the way of the camera?

I'm guessing the suction cup part wasn't lined up with the camera?

I have one, and yes, you can adjust a lot! But in normal nav mode in my car, the suction cup would be in view. But a quick reconfigure for a few seconds would get it like this? Probably.

While you're at it, you could see about convincing her to give your balls back..........

I had it mounted up today (for the first time as well) in my Challenger and was pretty pleased with it.

Obviously I didn't (nor do I plan to) do any off-roading lol, so I can't really attest to a stress test in those conditions. But I can say that I loved how sturdy it was. Very solid feeling. I could easily press any button on the front or sides of the phone, without having to use equal pressure on the other side. So instead of having to hold my thumb on the right side of the phone while I pressed the power button to turn the screen off, I was able to reach over and just press the the power button. The phone didn't move at all.

So overall I'm very impressed with the mount. I'm contemplating picking up another one for the Mustang so that I can hardwire the power cable in and route it around and out of view. Right now I'm using the Verizon car charger that has the USB port on top of it so that you can charge another device at the same time, with a 6' USB extension cable plugged in, that connects to the USB cable that came with the phone.

But I'll eventually wire something up from the fuse box that charges usb and run it through the roof panel so that it comes out right above the mirror. That way you'll only see a small portion of the wire coming down to the mount. And if I wrap it around the mount you really won't notice it at all lol.

I just have to reposition the suction cup to a better position so that the camera isn't blocked by the arm lol. I too took some video today while pulling onto the H1. I might try to do it right below the mirror. Might be pretty nice. We'll see.

I take it you are not married, because when you are, before you spend over $30,000 on a vehicle, you both have to be in agreement, or else life can be not so fun. I do have to sleep sometimes.

Oh no I'm married. And yes we make decisions together when it comes to things that affect the both of us (which is most things really). Our rule is any financial transaction over $100 has to be discussed, if not necessarily to agree on, but at the very least as a courtesy to the other person.

My issue was when you said "When I got my Droid X, she said that is my last toy for a while..." That wouldn't fly in my house. My wife doesn't allow me to do anything. Nor do I allow her to do anything. We make decisions together, yes. But unless the electronics toys I want to purchase is going to put us in some kind of financial bind, there's no "allowing". I let her know "hey love, I'm going to buy this." And unless she's been trying to save up for something that she wanted, or something important for the house, I go out and buy it.

I hate the male chauvinists who think they're "the man of the house" and all that crap. But I also equally detest the little men who let their female significant others dictate what they can and can not do.

"I'm the man and my word is law" is crap and doesn't have a place in society anymore. But neither does the "I have the pu$$y, I make the rules" bullshit.

Ok I'm off my soapbox now. Sorry I just get worked up when some whipped guy like you makes some stupid remark about "you must not be married"... Yes I'm married.

I'm just in a marriage where the term "equal partnership" means just that... equal.

Again, sorry for the major off topic jaunt. We now return you to your regularly scheduled discussion. :D

I guess I left out the part about she is pregnant and we are expecting our first child. I am not whipped, I do pretty much whatever I want, I just don't go out and spend $30,000 unless she is ok with it.

So I'm home and able to upload a few of the videos I took today. As you can see in the 3rd video, I moved the car dock under the mirror before I left work. Still not quite where I want it and not the best position for video (seems a bit skewed to the right), but at least the mount arm isn't visible in the video frame anymore lol.

And not bad quality for night time video imo. I think the update really did improve the video capture quality. Was really grainy before even at higher settings. Also, sorry for the wind noise in the second video, I had the windows down in that one to see how well the mic would pick up the engine.

Oh and did I mention, MY GOD I LOVE THIS PHONE!!!!!!!

I wonder if this would be sturdy enough to put on track with.

As in a race track? I don't see why not. Especially since you can expect a decent track to me a lot smoother of a ride then local streets. You notice the pot hole around 0:55 in the third video? I rest my case lol.

That is a pretty beast pothole. The track surface itself is usually pretty smooth but depending on how aggressive you hit the gators it can get pretty bumpy, not to mention going off track. I would hate to spin and lose my phone out the window lol (not that I'm prone to off track shenanigans).

well it seems this may be somethings others may be into..i def am..dont have an off roading jeep or dodge challenger but im gunna get some video up myself..i'm jealous..hopefully either this thread or something similar can be made official lik the post your pictures thread

I feel like a ****** asking this... but how are you making your videos longer than 30 seconds?

Ummm do you have your video mode set to "mms mode" or something like that? There's an option in there to change it from the HD video to video message quality. And I think the lower quality limits the files size, thus limits the record time. At least it did that on my blackberry. Play with it and see if you can find the option.

Also, when taking video if your view of the video being taken isn't full screen on the phone, then you definitely have the MMS mode enabled.

Hope this helps. And sorry I couldn't be more precise, I don't have my phone in front of me due to being at work. If you are still having issues and nobody else has addressed them by the time I get home in a few hours, I'll post a more thorough walk through on how to switch recording modes.
