Help playing avi files on N7 2?

I'm having problems playing avi or DivX files on my new n7 2. It does play them, they just look terrible. Dark and shadowy areas in particular are very "blocky" and full of grayish artefacts dancing all over the place. The very same files played perfectly well on the old n7, no problems whatsoever. I'm a bit puzzled as to why this happens and only with this type of files. For example, the freebie Transformer movie that comes with the table looks gorgeous and streaming video (YouTube, iplayer etc) look fine too. Any ideas?

I use MX player with a bunch of TV shows I recorded and converted to 1280x720 and they look great.

Perhaps the video you are playing is low resolution and the artifacts just stand out a lot more because the screen is much higher resolution? (Just an idea).

The files in question are 624 x 352 (Mad Men d/loaded from Movieberry). Does that mean that the resolution is too low for the N7 v2? But good enough for the v1??
I use DVD Catalyst to convert the files and use the default resolution for the N7 v2 (1920 x 1200)
the results are exactly the same, whether I just copy the original file onto the tablet or use DVD Catalyst. I'm at a lost!
