Playstation Live PS4 unveiling

I wasn't super impressed with the half hour or so I watched. The PS4 looks like it will be a good gaming machine, but nothing about it blew me away. Mostly incremental usability and social integration. I was pleased to see so many games lined up, and to find that there is, in fact, no anti-used games measure.

For downloaded games, I would image every game will be available for download day one. The play while downloading feature is nice. However, the PlayStation Network is not Steam. There is no way Sony would use a competing games platform on their new console. The PSN/streaming/downloading on the PS4 (and PS3) is all Sony Owned. This is why they bought Gaikai a year or two ago.

Steam already exists on the PS3, and steam is not a competitor as a platform. It is a service that allows you to buy and download games.

I believe that sony will go to download only in the middle of the PS4s lifespan, and having a company like steam that has already done this in one area would make the transition easier.
Now if they were to go to strictly download only games in the future, you would either need to be able to stream it or increase your hdd space drastically.. from what I have read, the ps3 is easy to upgrade when it comes to hdd space compared to the xbox..
But sony does have a company that offers the ability to stream any game over the internet to a console named in an above post.. Since they spent quite a pretty penny on them you better believe they will start utilizing them as soon as they can and as much as they can.

lol....I wasnt gonna be too excited for the PS4....I am saving up now. The controller looks more ergonomic, the dedicated chip for uploads/downloads: to play a game while its still downloading etc.

For games..I have a feeling the PS4 versions might have lil perks vs the PS3 versions.

I said what I said about the controller because from the side it looks like a 360 controller. The 360 controller feels better to hold, more support for the base of the thumbs.

I heard that it will not be backward compatible at all, can anyone confirm this?

If thats true, I think its a stupid decision, forcing people to buy games they already have for a new console.

I'm interested to see MS's answer the the PS4

I dont think they would necessarily remake all PS3 games for the PS4. I dont think that has happened yet with any system. You just keep your PS3. If you mean PS1 and 2 games....how many ppl have the PS3 thats fully backwards compatible?

Games you got off PSN should still be available to play on the PS4. Sony cant be THAT crazy...lol.

Eventually PS3 games would wind up on PSN...like PS1 and 2 games. PS3 games are already on PSN tho.... FWIW...I still have a fat model PS2 and an orig Xbox....lol. Cant get more backwards compatible than that... :D

I don't think they'll go download only in this generation, maybe next, but they have the blu ray drive there for a reason, the world isn't ready for that yet, and they would lose a lot of business. They would lose mine. I won't go for it. I will only buy games that I can physically hold and keep forever, not files that I "license". If they really want to push people toward downloads, though, they should sell the downloaded versions significantly cheaper than the physical copies. That would speed the momentum toward dl only imo.

After a little research I've found that you're right, Steam does exist on the PS3. But it is not the Steam Store. Certain Valve games (namely Portal 2) allow you to access Steamworks (cross platform play with PC/MAC, Steam friends list, etc.). It's just a way for Valve to connect the PS3 version of their own games to the people playing on PC, and deliver updates to the game without going through Sony.

Sony has their own service that sells digital copies, the PlayStation Store. Sony doesn't need Steam to deliver digital games.

In my opinion the world isn't ready for stream/download only consoles. Except maybe Kansas City with their Google Internet. But I predict in at least 5 to 10 years it will be heavily pushed and Internet will be as common as the flu, with even better technology than it has now. Just look at what Google is doing.

In the U.S., the lack of broadband penetration and fast internet speeds has nothing to do with technology. It's just huge corporations with no incentive to upgrade their networks. I don't think it's a matter of time, so much as the Government/FCC doing something to create standards or create more competition (anti-trust). Otherwise, the lack of broadband will hinder innovation and the ability to deliver internet based services.

All I have to say is thanks Sony, but no thanks. IMO this is an insult to gamers everywhere.

To each their own though.

...I'll stick to PC gaming. XD

I think this will end up being one of those scenarios where you have to buy new in order to get an unlock code, etc etc.. (depending on publisher)

That would suck for people who prefers second-hand games because they are way cheaper.

Do EA Sports games like Fifa request for unlock code?

Currently that's only to play online. What people are concerned about with the upcoming generation of consoles is being required to register even single player games, which would effectively put an end to the used games business and make even lending games to a friend a huge hassle if not impossible.

A couple of things:

EA is doing away with the online passes for current and upcoming games:

EA makes some Online Pass content free on Xbox Marketplace • News • Xbox 360 • Eurogamer.net

Orig article:

EA to discontinue Online Passes • News • PlayStation 4 • Eurogamer.net

Most guessed its because of built in DRM on the next gen consoles....so it remains to be seen if both the PS4 and Xbox One will make used games an issue.

This doesnt get mentioned alot....but I get my used games from Amazon...Used - Like New. Its less chance for a damaged disc vs GameStop...and I get unused codes with Used - Like New. (the Used - Very Good and lower are cheaper in some cases, but I dont know if they come with unused codes) I recently spent $13 for a Used - Like New game.... Some cost more...some are cheaper.

I dont really care about used games from Game Stop....I mostly get new games from there now. I'm worried about Amazon... And of course I'm worried about lending games to ppl. I still have NFS Most Wanted a co worker lent me a few months ago. I rarely play it....I probably wont buy it now. Sometimes you need to play the full game to get a better feel of you are gonna like it or not.....demos sometimes dont tell a good or full story.

Well, the event this thread was about took place in February lol, but if you're talking about the E3 event, it looks like it was at 9. A quick Google came up with some pictures of the console. Can't say it's all that attractive, but none of the PlayStations are, really.

EDIT: well, I guess it depends what time zone you're in lol.

Sony E3 2013: no restrictions on used games on PS4 | VG247

Good news!
No restrictions on used games
Jack Tretton came back on stage and dropped two bombs: the PlayStation 4
will not impose any restrictions on used games. It will not require you to
authenticate online . Tretton said the model Sony has used with PlayStation 3
has worked to date, so why change it?
Part of the crowd literally broke into a chant of “Sony, Sony, Sony” at this
point.

Looks like you will have to get PSN+ to play online, though. Sony is giving up a big advantage there.

Unfortunately, there was one downer; Sony mentioned that non-PlayStation
Plus members will “have access to single-player games“. It looks like, as with
Xbox Live for the past two generations, you’ll now need to subscribe in order to
take advantage of the full network offering of Sony’s console.

Exactly. I think part of the problem is MS consoles have been waaaay easier to hack and run pirated games on. Even going back to the PS2 and orig Xbox.

I fired up Metal Gear 4 last week, there was and update (its been awhile since I played...the updated is from a year or 2 ago...lol) and it now has the option to install the whole game all at once instead of as a new chapter comes...but it still needs the disc to run.

Sorta like a PC.....

Why coudnt MS do that? Does all or most disc based PS4 games do partial installs? If so...MS shoulda just went that route.
