I have googled and youtubed research on rooting my nook color for some time now. I have never found an answer to my number 1 question.

I love my NC 1.2
calibre says I have about 700 books on my internal memory. It took a long while to convert and sort my ebooks to nc epub by author and series number and everything and to make shelves for it all.

I have found there are some books not in the B&N market that I have purchased on my kindle app for my itouch4.

I want to keep my NC the way it is but I want to get install the kindle app and be able to read all the books I have bought for it on my NC. I figure once rooted I'll find lots of other perks. access to the android market would give me the best of both worlds since I have itouch4 and access to the app store.

I have found this guide for manual nooting [NC][1.2 ONLY] ManualNooter 4.6.16 - xda-developers
and because I like to see the process before I do it this handy video
YouTube - ‪How To: Root Nook Color 1.2 + Add Market & Amazon App Store‬‏
(I have not watched this video yet)

and just now this guide for just using and sd card [ZIP][DEV][ROM] Nookie Froyo 0.6.8 (02/15) CWM flashable! - xda-developers

I'm kinda leaning on trying the sd card method first. but before I go the manual nooter route. My number 1 question is will doing so erase my current NC and force me to reinstall all my books and shelves? (if this is the case I'll most likely not root at all.)
Also will manual nooter let me do as decribed meaning use my NC the "normal way" but also let me instal the kindle app and android market place

thanks for any help on the matter

Because i haven't a stock nook I'm not sure this will work. But I would USB it to the PC and transfer all the books to the PC. Then just throw them on an SD card that u put in the nook. After u do that, get to to rooting

If you back up your library to your PC, you *may* have to redo your home screens. I was rooted with 1.01 so I had to reset to update to 1.2 before doing the manual nooter thing, so it was already wiped, but i got my library back easily. If you are already on 1.2 unrooted, then I don't see a reason why rooting would change anything, but someone who's actually done it, should chime in here.

Absolutely. Once you "noot" and you press the Nook "n" button, it will give you the option to use the "Home" launcher, which is default B&N Nook or the Zeam launcher which will give you access to the market. Just make sure you don't set one of them as defualt or you won't get the option again until you clear the defaults.

If you put the other ROM (CM7, for example) on your SD card, it should not touch your internal software at all. But that does depend on which method you use, and there are several.

Keep in mind that the current Android flavor on your NC is Froyo, if you are running 1.2. It already includes Flash support but it doesn't let you access the Android market directly and won't let you install apps not purchased from B&N. Those would be the reasons to either root, which would modify the internal software, or use an SD card containing another ROM.

If you're concerned about losing your internal memory I would suggest making a bootable SD card with CyanogenMod or Phiremod. I'd skip the Froyo business. With a bootable SD you get the best of both worlds, an Android tablet and the stock Nook functions.

thanks to everyone who replied

I don't know if I need a full on tablet cause my ipod touch does everything like that I could need current nook stoke does flash so I can watch my thatguywiththeglasses.com videos
all the research and everything there seems like so many diff ways to do this I wish I had someone to walk me through it. I belive I'll try the sd card modd described in the "you don't need to root your nook to get ....thread"

Yes, B&N 1.2 is Froyo so if you want to install anything to boot off the sdcard, I'd go with CM 7.1.0 stable when it comes out in a week or so.
