Please explain video effects

This is my issue, I download videos on a regular basis from various sources and I use MX Video Player as my video app. I usually download and save the file to my PC and then transfer them to my LG Thrive(msm 7627 600MHz processor, video display 320x480, 160MB internal memory and I have a 4G SD card installed. The really strange part that I don't understand is some videos play through with no problem while others the sound drops out and the video playback slows. Since I don't know a lot about the video and camera side of Android I'm really hoping that someone can help me with this. Is there a modification that I can do to my build.prop file? Thanks very much in advance.

Depends on the file type of the video. Some videos formats like mkv can't be decoded by the hardware on Android and needs to be decoded entirely on the CPU only (software decoding). Your rather low end hardware is unable to keep up with showing the video and decoding.

MKV is technically just a container. The question is whether the video stream (usually encoded as H.264) can be hardware accelerated. There are many profiles and encoding options available for H.264 and hardware-based decoders can differ in what levels/profiles are supported.
