Help please help before I cry!!

Hi
Just bought a galaxy note II.

Worked ok for the first few days until i downloaded kies and plugged in the phone. First message flashed up on the pc was 'Missing hardware ID'. Eventually it connected to kies and i backed up my data.

I couldn't download the firmware prpogramme as I had to enter my serial number and it wasn't recognised. ???

Plugged into pc again today and an update was availabe so I ran it. Partway through it froze and after 2 hours I unplugged the phone and closed the application. I tried to run the recovery programme as the phone went into recovery mode. It did the first download ok and then on the 2nd firmware emergency recovery screen it froze at 2%. I unplugged everything, uninstalled kies, reinstalled kies and then connected the phone again. It didn't recognize it but I had noted down the recovery code from earlier and it started to run the recovery programme again.

Again it has done the first bit but then got stuck on 2% again - been like that for over an hour now. :(

I'm not at all techy so if you can help me, you will have to give me it in numpty speak lol

I can't give you all the details of the phone as it's locked in recovery mode so I can't access the settings.

I know it's running android 4.1.1
it's on a contract with 3 (uk) for the network but the phone was purchased from amazon. I've had it for 10 days.

Hope someone can help before I feel the need to throw it and my pc across the room!

I am in the UK and apologies if i have posted this in the wrong place!

I was just wondering if your device was Rooted (Hacked). I moved your thread to your devices General section where it will get more eyes from the knowledgeable members here. :)
Rooting your device gives you administrative privileges over your device enabling you to do much more with your phone like installing different Operating systems, (Custom ROM's) removing carrier bloatware, tweaking the device to your liking and much more.

i would say not then. it's only a week old, as you can see i clearly havent a clue and the phone came in a sealed box so shouldnt have been hacked.

i think im just going to have to send it back as the suggested fixes of holding volume up, home and on together havent made any difference.

thanks for your help though.

Send it back, probably easiest way of sorting this in my opinion.

Make sure kies is full operational next time, try re installing it.

Whats this?, I can't remember having to enter any numbers, are you sure you were not trying to register it?
when you run the emergency recovery software it gives you a code to enter. ive done that many things with it today, i cant remember at what point that was. however, when i uninstalled and reinstalled kies and then connected the phone, it didn't then recognise it and wouldn't connect but because i was able to enter the code, it realised it needed to run the emergency recovery software .... and that was when it failed again :(

looks like it. kies was fully operational, i think there's been a fault with it all along, because of saying it had missing hadware ID and then samsung website not recognising the serial number.
i just it's a legit phone and not a copy. guess we'll see tomorrow when i contact amazon to return it!!

cheers

To be honest Kies software is a tad hit and miss for alot of users. Most people who buy Android phones never use it, or even know about it but its still the main source for updates (apart from going down the root road).
I have not had any problems with it apart from one or two driver errors before the recent firmware update, and to be honest, looking at you're problems, mine could have been just the same, but I double checked and triple checked when plugging my phone in to the PC, that it was not returning errors, like some people had posted in the past.
I would say 100% its just a software issue with your phone, but if there is no one here that can help get it restored to factory settings, then returning it may be the better option.

Hahaha...I was about to ask what it does!...LOL. It's a proprietary Samsung software, so I didn't even pay much attention to it at all and thought it was just bloatware.

What exactly does it back up?

It can pretty much back up all your settings etc, music, photos, contacts, messages, call records etc... and restore to your preference.
Like I say, there have been problems with this program and alot of users and tbh I'm not surprised.
It sometimes needs some friendly persuasion to install drivers.
For instance, yesterday I installed Kies and went through the usual process and everything went fine, found the phone etc..... but a few minutes later there was an error, can't remember what it was now but it continued and I rebooted and still the error. Eventually I went into device manager on my PC, found the culprit and searched for the driver on windows update, it found it and voila, but this is not explained to people and is obviously going to cause problems :)

Thanks. I'm assuming it can back up all the OEM settings, but not when it comes to settings for apps/widgets used from 3rd parties, correct?

So, if I used Nova Launcher and a bunch of widgets from 3rd parties and different customizations, Kies wouldn't be able to backup/restore those, right? If it can, I should be taking advantage of that...LOL.

If you can get back into your phones recovery vol up + home button + power button do you see an option to reset or factory reset phone. If you do, use the volume buttons to scroll down, select it, and use the power button as your enter key.

Then come back and let us know what happens. If at all it boots back up do NOT hook it back up to Kies. Kies, IMO, is a death trap- others may feel differently.

Just send it back to Amazon, they are brilliant . I had to send back my Note 1 and I got a replacement the next day!

Kies is a nightmare - avoid

As a nubi like the OP I can sympathise with his problems.
Having had apple products for a few years I found iTunes a dream to use. It was so simple.
However android is not so user friendly and as for kies I have no idea what it is and would be afraid to install it.
The "one world" of Apple is very comforting as when ever you ask a question everyone sees the same screen so understands immediately.
Even with the same phone SGN2 even in the same function everyone (sorry many people) appears to see something different.

Ok, glad I didn't even touch the app...lol.

Looks like I'll be sticking with my standard backup methods.
