Root Please Help! I think I bricked my Note!

S pen

Newbie
I should mention that I know there are many threads like this, but I am not a geek and do not know the meanings of the terminology, and I also have many questions to ask so please bear with me.

I have a galaxy note which was running 4.0.3 which I got OTA. Two days ago I successfully rooted the device through "CWM recovery" and installed Franco Kernel. This was done successfully, and seemed to make absolutely no difference to my phone, whatsoever.

Anyway, since my goal was to install CM9 and then CM10, I tried to install a GB ROM (which I understand is necessary as going to CM9 straight from ICS can cause a brick)... I did this by installing the "Abyss" Note Kernel. I tried one version which was "custom" and the other "original"... neither of which proceeded past the booting sequence, despite being successfully installed.
No problem. I would just go back into recovery mode and re-install the Franco Kernel, and my phone would boot and operate as normal.

However, last night I had installed one of the "Abyss" kernels (the ones that don't proceed past boot), and I had low battery so I just pulled the battery, and reconnected it and put it on charge but did not turn the phone on (left it with the battery charging animation overnight). This morning I went to turn on the phone and it wouldn't go past boot. "Ah, of course, the Abyss Kernel doesn't work", so I went into recovery and reinstalled Franco kernel so that I could use my phone as normal, only to find my heart sink a little as I realized it wasn't proceeding past boot. It just stays on the screen with the flashing "SAMSUNG" logo.

Please help!!!

I guess you are not bricked
Try flashing stock gb rom
You can directly flash any custom rom from ics if you are on safe kernel(like hydracore). As far as if are on safe kernel, you dont brick your phone
And,it is not necessary to flash cm9 to get cm10
You can directly flash cm10 on a safe kernel

So you are telling me that I am not bricked?!! Thank you my Indian friend!:D
Now... how do I go about installing a stock gb rom?

And if I understood you correctly, I can install ICS (or jellybean) roms straight from official ICS, as long as I have installed a "safe" kernel as backup? So I don't have to install a gb rom first?

For now, I will be happy to just restore my note to working order:)... so if you could please post me a link to where I can download the files for Stock gb rom and guide to how to install it, I would really appreciate it.

By the way, I am from Australia.:)
Thanks again!

You can install any rom(stock or custom) directly from ics if you are on a safe kernel.I mean you need to flash a safe kernel on the ics rom,and then flash any rom. Here is a safe universal kernel.
[KERNEL] [TW-AOKP-AOSP-CM9-CM10-PA-MIUI ] ~HydraCore v5.4~ One kernel for ALL ROMS! - xda-developers

And here is a prerooted gb rom
Dev-Host - SGN_XX_OXA_KJ1_FACTORYFS.zip - The Ultimate Free File Hosting / File Sharing Service
Its a rooted rom and the most safest rom to flash

Hey SPen, just a heads up, I moved this to the Note All Things Root section. Thanks for understanding. :)

Raj, the problem is that I can't download "Hydracore" onto my phone because I can't use the browser (I can't access anything other than CWM recovery). I am guessing I will have to do this through my computer somehow? and if so, could you please give me a link with an easy to follow instruction? (remember I am not too tech-savvy:))

Also, since the whole reason I got myself into this mess was to possibly try CM10 (jellybean), could you also post a link for the easiest way to load the jellybean rom?

Thanks again!:)

First download the gb rom and flash it using pc odin
Then your phone boots up normally and you could use it
Then download the hydracore kernel and flash it using pc odin..you will be rooted automatically
And later flash the jb rom through cwm recovery

Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a "PC Odin" for mac. I was thinking that I could remove the SD card from my Note and put it in my old Incredible S, then download the gb file on my mac and load it onto the SD via the Incredible S. Then I could put the SD back in my Note and "flash" the gb rom file from the SD via CWM recovery. Would this work?

You cant flash stock rom through cwm
You should do it only through odin
"Heimdall" is a similar to odin..It can be used in mac
I never used it and so i dont know how to use it..You can google about it
And DONT DO ANY WIPE FROM CMW.As you are on 4.0.x,you could brick your note if you do a wipe

That ROM is 500 mb and it is going to take 9 hours to download... WTF??
I'm going to try and install it using "heimdall" because the crap little Windows netbook that I have won't recognize/install the USB modem that I use. I would normally use the wifi from my Note, but the Note is dead.

Hopefully this works... the Note has been such a crap phone but it has all my stuff on it.

Raj, I just started flashing that ROM through odin and it's been "downloading" for 20 minutes, and nothing is happening. I am worried I now have a nice paperweight in my hands. Is it bricked? What do I do, unplug it?

It didn't brick... I unplugged it while it was downloading (not going anywhere for 20 minutes) the tried again and it worked!

It booted up as normal. On a bad note, the backup app that I used for my contacts and messages didn't work, and I lost everything. Also, that GB rom is the biggest piece of....

I don't know who put that thing together, but it a terribly poor piece of software. It is so slow you wouldn't believe it. home screen transitions are probably slower then the first android ever made! Worst of all, phone calling is not functional... on a mobile phone! Luckily I don't call much, but it a relief that my note still works.

You DEFINATELY shoulld NOT be flashing anything until you do alot more reading and understanding of how to flash roms, how to recover from disasters, how to flash a AOSP rom VS. a Touchwiz rom, and so forth...read, search, study, and then read more; the note is a fantastic phone, but, any phone will be horrible if you try to change things without being 110% certain about what you are doing..
