Hello my name is Greg, I'm new here and this is my first post.

I am currently living and working in China.
My wife purchased me a Note 2 for V-Day.
I was super stoked!

I was using a Samsung GTI9100 before also purchased in China and never had any issues.
I came home turned on the new phone and noticed there is no Google Play.
So I went and installed it. It installed with no issues, but when I launch it, it just closes.

I've tried everything so far and no luck.
I loaded a app called Gmail and the same issue.
I can download apps from Samsung Apps and they run fine.

Anyone got any ideas as to whats going on?
Is the iron curtain of China built into the phones now?

Would rooting the phone help?

Samsung Galaxy Note 2 GT-N7100
Android 4.1.2
Purchased at an official Samsung store..

Thanks for your help in advance!

You shouldn't need to root it mate, have you tried uninstalling the apps and re installing. I too came from the GTI1900 (s2) and I have no problems, damn I wish my wife did things like that lol.

I had a similar problem with my Note 2. The play store stopped opening randomly one day. Did a search and found a fix. In application manager, under all apps go to the bottom of the list. You should be able to turn on download sync. Mine turned off somehow. As soon as I turned this on it worked fine again, no problems since

Yeah, I have tried many times. It opens quickly and then closes.
Thanks for your response!

mpciii,

I went to application manager - all apps - and can't seem to find it.
All the apps are in alphabetical order, I don't see one named "download sync" anywhere... Is it under a different name?

Thanks for your response

When I did this it was just all the way at the bottom. Don't even think it was an app just an option. It's been a while since I had this issue so I may not be remembering the name correctly but try scrolling all the way to the bottom of the list of apps. If not, I'd do a Google search, there were a few threads that discussed different ways to solve this problem.

And are you 100% sure it's a genuine note 2? And not a fake?

keyan333,
Yeah I am pretty sure, we went to a Samsung store to purchase it. Everything in the store was Samsung. I hooked up to Kies and it sees it as a GT-N7100. Is there another way to tell?

Thanks
Greg

Okay here is the answer:

Since I purchased my phone at an official Samsung store, the Chinese government has blocked all Google and VPN connections in the 4.1.2 OS.

If I would had purchased the phone from a little mom and pop store the phone would either be fake or from Hong Kong in which case containing Google Play etc....

I went to a small shop to see what they can do about it... They said they could over write the software with an unblocked version, but they haven't cracked 4.1.2 yet. He said come back in a month and he should have a cracked version by then and will replace the software on my phone.

So I guess I just have to wait for now. I will follow up when the new software is installed.

Thanks for all your help!

Have they blocked it on a normal i.e. non Chinese PC? It might also help if you used a VPN with a US or European server.

Yes, I have a paid account with Express VPN in the USA, so that I can surf the net on my Imac.

Normally, you cannot visit youtube, facebook etc.... But I have set up my home computer to connect with a US server.

When doing the VPN set up on the phone, the save button is greyed out and cannot save the VPN account. It works on my ipad, but that was purchased in the states before I left. They have programmed the phone to not allow you to save a VPN account....

China is a great country to live in, except for things like this.

So, have you tried to install apps (either with or without the VPN) directly from the Google Play site at :-

Google Play ? Google
