Root Please help me root my HTC Desire 601 (Virgin Mobile)

Hi everyone, I'm new here. A recent update that really messed my phone up has lead me to your awesome forum.

I found a thread about how to root and load ROMs to the HTC Desire 601. I was going to paste the link here, but I'm new so the system won't let me.

The reason I haven't done this myself already is that I've never rooted or done any such dev work to a phone before. I don't really feel comfortable as this is foreign territory for me. I just got this phone about 3 weeks ago and was loving it until the KitKat 4.4.2 update which came to me during the 4th of July weekend.

I noticed several very bad changes in the new version:

1) They removed the option of "Hold Home button for menu" in this update, which means I rely on apps to have the "..." option somewhere for in-app settings. This is especially a problem for the LauncherPro app, which is my favorite UI and it seems that the developer has stopped updating the app so we can't expect a fix for the issue.
2) When playing music, they made the lock screen controls ugly and unintuitive.
3) It appears that they broke/removed scrolling wallpapers.
4) My phone seems to run significantly slow after the update. Before it was very fast loading and switching between apps.

I don't know if others have noticed these same issues, or if you guys have any suggestions. But it appears that the only way to revert these horrible changes is to get the previous ROM loaded back on my phone.

I have Skype and Google Hangouts and would be happy to connect with someone via TeamViewer or a remote software of your choosing. I also have a microphone so we could talk as we go through everything.

Please let me know, I'd really like to restore my phone back to being awesome again. If you have any questions let me know. Thanks to anyone who can assist!

Welcome to the forums!! :D

I've found a great tutorial for getting you rooted.

http://androidforums.com/desire-601...stall-recovery-guide-htc-desire-601-zara.html

This is what you want to do. Follow the instructions in that thread. If you're at all confused, or have any questions, post them up, we'll get you sorted. :)

Getting the bootloader unlocked is the first step, from there it's getting a custom recovery and getting Super User installed. Once you have those you'll be rooted, and you can flash back to the previous rom. Speaking of that we need to see if one is available.

Don't be shy, we're a friendly bunch. :)

Thank you Granite. The 2 people I've spoken to so far have been very nice.

So, I've done some reading and I believe the last OS I had was 4.3 (Jelly Bean). So hopefully we can find that stock ROM. I hope to get started on this later today or some time this weekend. I won't be shy :)

Also if it helps, I would gladly connect with someone via Skype to for easier assistance.

I'm sure I'll be back here posting when I get to my next question. Thanks again!

Once Granite is on the scene, I know you are in good hands. I'm no good with HTC devices, but between Granite here, and some other smart folks likely to show up, they will have you up and running in a jiffy. Just make sure you read and listen. If you don't understand something, ask. They are also as friendly as they are smart and will explain things further if needed.

I'm going to close out your other thread now that it has served its purpose. I'll likely be off the forums for the next week or so, but I'm happy to leave you in good hands.

Good luck getting your phone fixed.:)

Okay, so I tried going through this and ran into a signature failed error. I took a screenshot to show you. Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

Where did you get the signature check failed? Is the bootloader unlocked or are you getting the error trying to unlock the bootloader?

Sorry, I had completely skipped Step 3 (misunderstood what the guide said). I'm finding that the guide assumes that I know quite a few things. But I'm glad to say I figured some of it out. I'm currently in the process of going through the rest still. I just unlocked my bootloader :)

Pressing on to the next step now...

So I was able to enter Recovery mode (the Philz menu). I'm not sure what to do here.

Do I need to put a ROM zip file onto my SD and then choose "Install from zip" ?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Well to add root (which is what the guide says) you just need to flash the super user binary: http://download.chainfire.eu/451/SuperSU/UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.01.zip?retrieve_file=1

That will root your current stock rom.

This issue is done the same as flashing a rom. Like you said, place the zip on your SD card and choose install.

As far as custom roms go, I don't have this device so I'm unfamiliar with any specific roms... I'd wait for one of your fellow flashers to chime in. I'll check back in your thread in the morning. If no one has suggested any roms, I'll search around and see what I can come up with!

I found a rom called:
HTC_Desire_601_Zara_stock_odex__1.10.41.8_root_updated_v.1.0.1

And I tried flashing that from my SD card just now. But now when I restart my phone it loads up the Bootloader menu screen. And I can't get the OS to boot :(

Shoot, I'm worried now.

Don't panic. It's because your phone is s-on. It's a common issue because the security checks won't allow you to write the kernel when you flash the rom.

Place a copy of the rom.zip on your desktop. Extract the boot.img and place that in your fastboot directory on the pc...

Use the command: fastboot flash boot boot.img

Then try booting the phone up again and all should be good. The kernel is stored in the boot.img and it is a problem with s-on devices when flashing a custom rom.

I can teach you another method for flashing roms while s-on but first let's get this baby booted up. :)

You are so awesome for helping and getting back to me so quickly! Btw, if you have google chat (hangouts) feel free to add me: **email address removed**

I'm online now. I'm going to go through the steps you just gave me and will let you know how it goes.

After doing that, I then chose "Reboot" and it's now been sitting at the "htc" white background screen for a good 5 mins. I can't tell if it's doing anything. Do you know if this is normal?

For reference when we get a chance to work on this later today:

Might be some useful resources there.

The above is for the gsm model so don't flash any of those files.

This is for jellybean I believe...

Looking for KitKat resources still.

hi jdub22! im pretty sure your phone is not booting simply becasue you have incompatible firmware. your kk hboot is not able to boot the jb rom.

in order to get back to a working device, youll need to flash a kk rom or restore a kk backup.

did you make a nandroid backup before flashing your new rom?

if so,we will just need to restore it :)

assuming that you didnt,we maybe should first get some info about your phone. place the phone in fastboot, and enter in cmd:
fastboot getvar all

copy and paste the results here, making sure to xxx out your imie, esm and meid. (to copy the cmd window, right click, click mark, highlight everything in white, then hit enter)

after youre up and running,we can walk you thru s off so that you can downgrade back to jb. i have joined the hunt for a kk rom or nandroid

Thanks Scotty! I was going to have him run a getvar all today but he's not going to be available until 8 or 9 pst.

And like you suspected, we don't have a nandroid available to work with. I've been searching for a zara_cl KitKat rom, ota, or dump/backup but have had no luck. Just for jellybean.

That is the ultimate goal here is to revert from the KitKat ota back to jellybean.

Thanks for popping in here! I could certainly use some backup on this one. :)

Thank you guys again for all your help!

Scotty, I got the info:

I noticed on that google drive there's a file called:
ZARA_CL_KK_ViginMobileUS_Stock.zip

Would it hurt for me to try loading that zip file as a rom? If it's the stock KK rom wouldn't it be worth a shot?

It's just a bootloader. :( Also, it won't flash from recovery, it's a different type of file.

I'm having a heck of a time finding what we need.

Scotty,

If someone else made a nandroid backup, could we work with that??

So we have this KK system dump: https://drive.google.com/uc?id=0B-kSF8g8H7KuMEU0SDR2Sm9yTU0&export=download

and I found a KK ota here: https://drive.google.com/uc?id=0B-kSF8g8H7KudEFRU1hPMjRObU0&export=download

It contains an updater-script... Can we work with this?

i dont think the updater script will do us much good. it will want to patch files that arent there

if someone else made a nandroid,i dont see why we couldnt trust it. we would just want to factory reset it after it successfully flashed to make sure the donors info was gone.

ill look into making a rom and see if its maybe as simple as swapping some files around with the jb rom that we have...

caN you provide a link for the rom that you tried? if the forum wont let you, remove the http:// so it doesnt look like a link :)

excellent! downloading it now :)

edit:
crap!

its got images inside instead of folders,so we cant swap things around.

what happened when you flashed that? did it indicate success?

we need to find a more conventionally set up rom(jb or kk)
