Root Please help me root my HTC Desire 601 (Virgin Mobile)

try this link:
https://docs.google.com/uc?id=0B8-7I2_Vt73ldUNPd2c4X0xoQXc&export=download

im downloading that also.

that is a twrp backup from this post

do you have twrp 2.7.1.1 installed?

if so,make a backup so that twrp creates a folder on your sd card. then place your sd into your pc via a usb adapter. youll need to extract the .zip file, and move the folder inside that is named "zara_cl442" into the backup folder made by twrp.

now wipe data/factory reset and restore the backup.

download this insecure kk boot image:
https://ssl.gstatic.com/docs/doclist/images/icon_10_generic_xl128.png

copy it to your fastboot directory, and fastboot flash boot imagename.img

hopefully youll be up and running :)

holler if you have questions :)

I love you.

I truly can't thank you guys enough for all your help :)

Scotty, I'm going to go through the steps you just gave me now, and I'll post again as soon as I'm done.

I'm also logged into google chat at the moment :)

Btw, I do have TWRP version 2.7.1.0 running. Is that good or do I need 2.7.1.1 ?

Thanks guys. I haven't had a chance to try this yet. I brought my phone with me to work today since I will have some time to try it here. Unfortunately when I plug it into my comp here, Windows isn't recognizing the device.

It's a Win7 64-bit computer (same as my home comp). I installed the HTC drivers (just like I did at home).. but I can't get the phone to go into "Fastboot USB" mode since the computer doesn't recognize the device. I tried a different USB port on the comp and no luck.

edit: just to confirm, I ran fastboot devices and it isn't seeing anything.
No worries if you guys can't help with this problem. If I can't get it working here I'll do it at home.

Put the driver somewhere handy (desktop maybe) and open up the device manager on the pc. When you're attempting fastboot mode, is there a yellow question mark in device manager?

Try right clicking it and update the driver. Choose have disk and browse to the driver location. See if it will work then.

Sadly I didn't have any luck getting it recognized on my work comp. But I'll be at home in a few hours and might have time to try out Scotty's suggestion above. Thanks! I'll keep you guys posted :)

IT'S WORKING!!!! Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm gonna go crazy haha! Wow awesome I'm speechless. You guys are so awesome thank you!

It loaded up the OS.. looking good! So how do we go about loading the last version of Jellybean on here?

Don't go too crazy yet buddy!! :D

You are going to want s-off, and actually, need it to go backward. Let's see what method is available for you. Also, first thing is first, before you do anything, make a backup. In twrp, backup system, data and boot. Then if anything goes wrong, you have something to fall back on.

You work on the backup, I'll start looking at s-off.

As far as I can tell, you'll want to use firewater s-off method.
http://firewater-soff.com/

May want to wait for scotty's word but I feel like you'd be safe to try. Especially with a backup.

Also, I think scotty wanted you to factory reset after getting up and running. Do this through twrp, not via the phone settings.

Okay I will take it slow and steady here.

First thing's first though.. I'm noticing that my TWRP somehow reverted to 2.7.1.0

This is after I had flashed it to 2.7.1.1 ... weird huh? Should I get it back to 2.7.1.1 before going further?

Also, I did a factory reset just before restoring the zara_cl442 backup. Do I need to do another factory reset?

Sorry I'm short here. Feeding baby, replying one handed.

Yes factory reset again. Because you are restoring someone else's backup. Also, try flashing twrp again. Technically the factory reset probably isn't crucial but go ahead.

Have you looked at the s-off link yet? We need to meet all the prerequisites..

Once s-off we can get back to jb

The firewater website says I need ADB. I haven't touched that yet so I'm not sure what it is.
Did you HTCdev bootloader unlock? If so you probably installed the adb and fastboot tools at the same time. Adb is used much like fastboot via command prompt. If you don't have adb or fastboot you can get it here: http://androidforums.com/faqs/443072-adb-guide-updated-2013-05-21-a.html#post5389081

Edit: just kidding. I know you have it already. We were using fastboot the other night. I can almost guarantee you are set up for adb as well. The commands are just prefixed with adb instead of fastboot.

Check your fastboot directory and see that adb.exe is there as well.

excellent! glad you are up and running again

not much more to add,as brian said, youll need to run firewater and achieve s off if you want to go backwards to jb,as you need to downgrade ALL the firmware as well in order for it to work.

after making sure you have adb in the same folder as fastboot, check the app drawer and make sure you have a working superuser on the phone. if not,you prolly restored an unrooted backup, wich is no big deal. if you find superuser to be missing,go ahead and flash it via recovery like you did the first time you rooted.

download and follow the directions for firewater. sometimes with windows, you may need to temporarily disable securities while downloading and using the tool. alot of the newer phone tools look to firewalls and antivirus software like a virus, and will hinder progress.

after you have s off,its a simple matter of running the older,jb ruu to get back to jb. at that time,we can install recovery, add root access, and then freeze an updater file so your phone will not try to OTA back to kk

holler if you have any questions! :)

Will this still work if im using CWM? Im using this phone on virgin mobile however, not that it would make a difference i guess? I just have no ROM on my phone and i'm hoping this works for me. But, i do not want to go back to jellybean. I just plan on keeping it on kitkat.

If the backup used was made from twrp, I don't think it will be compatible with cwm. I would use the same version of twrp as suggested above.

Can you still use fastboot? If so, it only takes a minute to flash recovery.img

Okay.. bump in the road guys. My wifi will not turn on. Wifi connection is a prerequisite for Firewater. I did some searching and it sounds like this Wifi thing is a common issue when you flash your ROM.

A guy in this thread says that WiFix Manager should resolve the issue:
WIFI won't turn on !! | HTC Desire | XDA Forum

I was going to load the .apk for WiFix onto my SDcard and install it, but the WiFix website says I need to be rooted first:
WiFi Fix for Android 4.x

Please advise :)

Sheesh, I go on vacation and you guys make another member smarter than me. Thanks a million Brian & Scotty. Glad you are moving forward jdub.

LOL! Yeah right, smarter than you... naw! You're too kind.

Any suggestions on how to proceed guys? No rush, I know you all have lives outside of AF :)
