Root Please help me root my HTC Desire 601 (Virgin Mobile)

Turns out I had installed 14.04. So I'm going to get version 12.04.

Question! There's a list of variants of Ubuntu 12.04 here:
Alternative downloads | Ubuntu

Which one do I want? My comp has a 64-bit Intel processor.. so I'm guessing I need either:

PHP:
12.04.4 Desktop (64-bit)

12.04.4 LTS Desktop (64-bit)
Which one do I want? Thanks! :)

Go ahead and get the LTS version. That means long term support. They support that version for 5 years.

Sorry I've been so scarce. Have a lot going on and plus I've been kinda standing back and letting Scotty do his thing.. Sometimes it gets confusing when multiple people are offering their two cents.

PLEASE don't apologize! :) You guys have been awesome.. I'm so grateful for the help.

And Brian: I'm going to drive up to Longview with beers-in-hand and hang out with you after this is all fixed!

So I got Ubuntu 12.04, made the DVD, and loaded up the "Try Ubuntu Without Installing" mode. Yet for some reason it won't run the commands that I'm trying. I changed my folder to my SDK folder and typed ls to make sure, and I could see all the SDK files (adb.exe, fastboot.exe, etc).

I was able to at least run the commands with 14.04 but having no success with this version. I'm sure there's nothing wrong with 12.04.. I just don't know what I'm doing wrong here. Any thoughts?

I think I'm going to try this guide after work today:
Ubuntu - Install Android Tools (ADB, Fastboot, ... & QtADB)

PHP:
2.1. Install Minimal Package

Thanks to Web8upd site these packages are kept up-to-date in a PPA for Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and later.
So, to install the tools, you just need to declare the PPA and install the packages :
 # sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nilarimogard/webupd8
# sudo apt-get update
# sudo apt-get install android-tools-adb android-tools-fastboot
The tools are now available in command line.
I'm thinking this might fix my problem of the terminal commands failing.

After learning a bunch I was able to get the Terminal commands to work.

I've done everything I can now.. Firewater and Rumrunner both failed to update. Firewater gave me the same error as my last test using Windows.

Rumrunner failed with:
FATAL: Download updated package at www.rumrunner.us

I did some reading and someone says that if you have a 64-bit computer then that's the issue. It needs to be done in Ubuntu 32-bit.

Can I just say Ugggghhhhhhhhhhhhh.................... :banghead:

Gonna have to see if I can get my hands on an old laptop or something for this. I'm going to be very happy when this is all over.

Uggggggg sorry man. You're really having a rough go at it.

I believe you can boot the 32 bit version on your 64 bit machine. I haven't used Ubuntu much. I've been fortunate enough to do all my rooting via windows but installed Ubuntu for fun. Pretty sure I did the 32 bit version on my 64 bit machine.

Thanks for the tip. I googled it and it does sound like other people have done the same (used 32-bit Ubuntu on their 64-bit rig). I downloaded and burned the DVD for 32-bit. I'll give it a shot tomorrow.

Well shoot. I installed 32-bit Ubuntu (ver 12.04) this morning and tried firewater and rumrunner. They failed with the same errors as I had with 64-bit.

I also disabled my Ubuntu firewall but that didn't help.

I'm wondering.. since Firewater gave the error:
PHP:
ERROR: kernel contains HTC anti-firewater patch!

Can I flash or rollback to a kernel that will work?

Any other ideas?

Yeah, that's obviously a problem... Let me look into it.

Any luck?

I wonder if I could send the phone to HTC and pay like $50 to have it flashed back to the stock JB that it came with.

Sorry bud... If you're using the insecure kernel I'm not sure what else would cause that message. I'm having a hard time finding any new information for your device. I keep running into the same threads over and over again. :/

As for HTC, I honestly have no idea. I'm sure they can fix it but not sure what services they offer in those regards.

unfortunately i doubt very seriously htc will help. :(

i cant imagine why your phone is giving you such a hard time,i thot linux would do the trick.

one other option would be to use a java card to turn off securities. i sent a PM to someone who can help, and linked him your thread. he may pm you directly if he has the diag files to do your phone. if not,ill let you know when i hear back from him :)

I'm tempted to try again. But I want to make sure I'm doing it correctly. Can you let me know if these are the correct steps to take?
1) I have:
-unlocked bootloader
-I have root access with SuperSU
-running TWRP 2.7.1.1
-running Android 4.4.2
-I have a backup of my currently working system
-anything else I should make sure of before continuing?

2) Install this insecure boot.img (from post #31)
https://drive.google.com/uc?id=0B-kSF8g8H7KuUHZVREcwc3R6cVk&export=download

3) Try Firewater (and if Firewater fails, try Rumrunner)

Good?

This is crazy.. Virgin has the same phone on sale for $140 (offer ends after today). It comes stock with Jellybean 4.2.2 so I ordered one.

They have a 14-day return policy so I can either:

1) Try to get S-OFF on my current device before 14 days. If I do, I can return the new one for refund.

or

2) Use the new device and sell the current one. Should get around $100 for it.

Either way I should be back to Jellybean in a few weeks or so. And I'm NOT updating! I'll have to figure out how to remove the software update prompt :)

Hi guys, I'm back and ready to root the new device! :) :) :)

It's a fresh Desire 601 running Android 4.2 (Jellybean). All is well with it except I need to root it in order to kill the process that keeps telling me there's a new software update (KitKat).

I'm going to try this guide again:
http://androidforums.com/desire-601...stall-recovery-guide-htc-desire-601-zara.html

But first I want to make sure I understand how to make a proper backup. Do you recommend any particular apps? I've been reading that TiBu (Titanium Backup) is one of the best to use.

Please advise! :)

Welcome back, Jon!! :)

Titanium Backup is great for backing up your apps and their data. I'm assuming since you got a new device, that you're already starting off without any important app data to backup.

The backup you are concerned about is a Nandroid backup made via your custom recovery. It will backup any apps and their data as well, but most importantly it will backup your entire system. Basically like having a stock rom to restore to if anything goes wrong. It makes a full image backup of the phone at the time of the backup.

Once you have your custom recovery, navigate to the backup menu. Backup system, data and boot partitions. Might be in the advanced menu to select partitions.

Probably a good idea to keep a backup of your backup somewhere off the device. Google Drive or your PC... Make sure not to wipe internal storage when wiping via recovery... You'd lose your backup along with all your personal files such as photos and music. But having a backup of your backup will save you in the event of an accidental wipe of the internal storage.

I can't vouch for the guide you are following, but it looks like it should be fine. I don't know all the specific ins and outs of this device. If you are looking to just obtain root access and not flash a custom rom, generally it's the same 3 steps for all htc devices:
1.) Unlock Bootloader through HTCdev
2.) Install custom recovery through fastboot (make backup)
3.) Flash the latest superSU.zip to install the superuser binaries and the app.

I see. So if I just want to back up everything exactly as it is, I'd be better off using TWRP to make a Nandroid backup after I'm set up have things configured to my liking.

Okay, so can I use TWRP for this? I'm familiar with it already so I'd prefer to just stick with it.
And do I need to make sure I'm using a particular version?

Okay, I should be able to handle this! So really I can't do a proper (Nandroid) backup until I flash the custom recovery. Sounds good!

Thanks!! I'll report back with more questions or good news!

Both backups are good for different reasons. For example if you change roms, you will be doing a clean install but use TiBu to restore your user apps and data.

Yes sir. Whatever version of twrp your device needs should be able to make a backup.

Correct. Let us know how it's going.

Well guys I did it! I flashed TWRP, made a Nandroid backup, installed SuperSU, verified root access with RootChecker. Then used the phone for a few days and today the Software Update notification finally popped up.

After a lot of searching I found out that freezing the app called Updater will disable the Android software update check altogether. So it should never check again for software updates.

I used the free app called System Tuner to freeze the Updater app.

This is exactly what I was trying to get! And I have you guys to thank for helping me learn how to do it. Now I can help other people root their phones if they need! :)

Thank you all so much!

PS: Brian, I gotta pay you a visit soon!

Hi,

I am in the exact same situation the OP was in. I am following this thread and I've done everything to this point. The link is broken, unfortunately and I do not know how to download another insecure image for this step.

Any help is more than appreciated. Thanks!

Hi wfsolis, I'm sorry to hear that you're going through the same issue. I'm not sure if you read the entire thread here but I was never able to successfully obtain S-OFF. I ended up buying the same phone again on a 50% off sale and then rooted and disabled the Updater.

But that doesn't mean you won't be able to get past the issue. This was my first experience with phone modding so my knowledge is rather limited.

The people here are really helpful. We'll see if we can find you another download for that insecure boot.img.

Just to be clear, you're running 4.4.2 (KitKat) right?

The other people here may have more questions. For compatibility purposes it's important that they know a lot of specifics about your phone.

Yeah, my phone updated to 4.4.2 around the same time yours did.

When I ran "fastboot getvar all", my information was exactly the same as yours.
