Please Help- Need to Unroot-back to STOCK

Remember, as DonB said, you are not actually going into recovery to flash the RUU .zip file. You have to go into HBOOT to do it and it can be accomplished whether you are rooted or not.

Be sure to follow the instructions in the link DonB gave you. Make sure the RUU .zip file is on the root of your microSD card as well.

when u say root of the card, that means not in any folders and right on the front of the microsd card right?

Yep, but his SD card is also wiped, wondering if he forgot to rename the file to Hercimg.zip, and he may not have put the file on his SD card, since he said he didn't have a card in the phone

stupid questions to follow:

a) do i rename the file to Hercimg."zip"? or since it is already a zip, just to hercimg?

b) what does it mean to have the file on the sd card?

I have the sd card in the phone. I can boot to hboot by holding down volume down and power. Its just hboot is not loading the hercimg zip file for some reason.

Yeah, not having the microSD card in the handset would certainly put a damper on him being able to flash the RUU .zip. Haha. :D

If he just follows the instructions from the link your provided, all will be well. Hopefully he does. ;)

DUDE, all is not well! lol. i have followed the instructions but im obviously doing something wrong.

I think it has to do with the zip file on my memory card. I maybe saving it wrong or not putting it on the root of my card.

Yes not in any folders. And it needs to be in all caps HERCIMG and no don't put the .zip because it is a zip. Try that and report back.

Here do this, download the file to your PC, Simply rename this to HERCIMG, then put it on the SD Card, then follow this to a T

  1. Place on the root of your SDCard (Yes in no folder, right on your SD card
  2. Power your phone completely off.
  3. Press and Hold VOL DOWN and POWER until your phone boots into HBoot mode.
  4. Wait for it to verify the zip, then click <ACTION> (Trackball) to update, or <SEND> (Green Call) to cancel.

Yup. Just drop it right into your microSD card and not into any of its folders.

Make sure it is named correctly and that .zip is not in the name twice if you have extension display turned off in Windows. The handset should recognize the file once you get into HBOOT and then flash it for you.

I tried it. didnt work still. HERCIMG is in caps

Do you have extension display enabled in Windows? By that, I mean can you, for example, see .txt at the end of a text file?

If you can, then just make sure the file is called "HERCIMG.zip" and is present on the root of your microSD card. It should work, unless the file is corrupt, in which case you should download it again and rename it as indicated above.

NO, it just shows HERCIMG. It does not show the .zip. How do i enable extension display? i have windows 7

If you right-click the file and go to properties, does it call it a zip file? Does it have the zip file for its icon?

If it does then it is probably named correctly. I am on Windows XP, so I am not 100% sure how to change it to extension display mode in Windows 7.

yes. its recognized as a zip. i figured out how to make it show extension of .zip. Still, didnt work. Sighhh.. this blows.

Im gonna try downloading the file from the above post one more time and formating my sd card and then placing the file on there. One more shot.

EDIT: IT DIDNT WORK. FAIL

If not, and your PC is able to recognize your phone, you can always try to flash the RUU from HTC website using HTC Sync

Another possibility is that your microSD card is shot or just not working 100% right. Do you have another one that you can try it with?

The other option is to just find the free version of ROM Manager .apk file and sideload it and then flash ClockworkMod Recovery. Then you can wipe and flash a new ROM or if you have a Nandroid backup, restore to your stock ROM and unroot via Z4Root.

all i want is to go back to stock rom. im stupid because i accidentally erased my microsd with my old saved data.

I have tried the method by hooking up my phone to computer. Of course, that didnt work because I got an error message: both message 170 and message 180. USb couldnt connect.

I was not talking about the method with the Android 2.1 RUU executable and HTC Sync. I meant just copying the free ROM Manager .apk file to your handset and then installing it, which could even be done via the Android web browser.

Then you could flash a recovery image. You could flash Liquid Sense 2.1 on there and that is probably stock enough that no one would really notice.

Thank you for this post!!!

I have a Nexus S 4g, that I am not satisfied with, ( poor reception, no removable micro SD, and a crappy camera).

I needed to reactivate my rooted Hero.

Your method worked flawlessly, I had the 1.47 HBoot update.

Thanks again

Hello-I put the HEROIMG.zip file in the root of my SD Card. I then booted to HBOOT. The instructions say to click ACTION (trackball) to run the update. When I push the trackball down on the HROOT menu item, nothing happens. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Never mind. I unrooted via the HTC Software Update method off of the HTC website. Thank you all!!! :p

For some reason, I had flashed my son's phone to CM7 and the radio (internet) stopped working. Scared me.

If you spelled as you did in your post then that is why it did not work, proper name should of been, HERCIMG

Hi I am using HBOOT 1.41 and this method of unrooting with HERCIMG.zip is not working, it is like HBOOT is not recognizing the file! Has anyone had this problem?

Can I really unroot using the 118 MB exe utility from HTC? Even if I am running 2.3.4 ? HTC Mobile Phone Support - HTC Hero? (Sprint) - Downloads

Or do I have to do FASTBOOT USB and do the utility... ? How do I do fastbook usb?

Yeah, I have noticed this issue happening with several people lately. I have seen people have success with both version 1.41 or version 1.47 of HBOOT, so I am not sure what the deal is.

Try downloading the Android 2.1 RUU .zip file again to make sure it is not corrupted. Android can be picky about MD5 checksums due to corrupted files.

Thanks for the reply. I have tried downloading multiple times from mediafire (the 2.1.1 RUU from XDA) and no dice. I also tried an old 1.5 RUU and no dice. Any other places to download the file?

Is there another way to unroot? Someone said you could do a fastboot usb boot and then run the 2.1 .exe update from HTC. Is the best alternative? How can I do this?

Thanks. My sisters phone was stolen in Spain so I am trying to unroot this phone so that sprint can activate it. Apparently they can't activate a rooted phone, not even through chat.
