Please help - USB device not recognized - S6

Galaxy S6 - I've tried 3 computers (Win7) and 3 cables - when I plug up the phone, it vibrates once and says charging. It use to allow me to swipe the drop down and choose "file transfer mode" - I don't get that anymore. I've talked to samsung chat 5 times - they've made sure all settings are ON and USB configuration is set to MTP mode. I've also tried SmartSwitch - it doesn't recognize the connection. I've also tried an OTG cable in the phone port, then connected a flash drive to it, but the phone doesn't see that either. It's like ALL FORMS of data transfer is disabled. Can anyone please help me? Thanks.

check your drivers for the phone on your pc.
"Check" it how - what exactly would be the fix? I just downloaded and ran the latest drivers for "samsung usb drivers for mobile phones" - it said I already had them installed - would i like to install again? Yes.... then I tested.... version 1.7.17.0
Same thing....usb device not recognized.

ok well then that rules out drivers. it's not the cables. it is not the pc. so the only thing is it could be is the phone. if it is the phone then it could be either software or hardware. to rule out software you can try a factory reset. if the factory reset does not help, then it is more likely a hardware issue.

I've got about 25gb of photos and videos I need to get off the phone. Factory reset isn't an option until I get my files backed up somehow. Ideas?

i use google photos and it automatically stores my photos and videos to the cloud without me having to do anything. i never ever have to worry about my photos.

that being said use smart switch to transfer your photos to the pc

Sure. :) Install Airdroid from the Play Store.

I only use Linux, and Airdroid works perfectly by simply connecting to it via browser on any of my computers. The app tells you how to do this, and it's very straightforward. You'll be able to save anything you want from your device to your computer. They both need to be connected to the same WiFi network.

If you need help, just let us know!

I can't get smart switch to see the phone either. :/

Perhaps, there is drirt instide the phones usb port. Gust a thought

Did some good scraping in there with a tiny needle.....and blew out with compressed air .... tested .... same thing.... USB device not recognized.

Did you read my reply?

I installed it.... few questions though...
  1. It says the free version is limited to 200mb per month (I have 40gb to get off my phone).
  2. It says 30mb is the largest file I can move. I have larger files on my phone.
Is my only choice now to pay for premium?

The free version is just fine and is unlimited. This is one app I've been using for many years and often praise it in these forums.

If I remember correctly the 200mb limit is if you're connecting with your cellular data service.

As long as you connect your PC and Phone to your wifi, that is all you need and is unlimited. Personally, I don't use cables anymore to connect to my PC, I just use Airdroid.

I'm able to move a 1+ gigabyte zip with no problem on the free service.

I've never come up against that myself, but I know that you can start/stop a subscription at any time. In other words, choose to go Premium from within the app, then select a monthly plan (which is only $2.99), copy off all your files, then cancel. (I've spoken directly to their support for this info.) You can, of course, choose an annual plan, but for a one-off project like this, a month is plenty.

Good information, Thanks

More questions please....
If you click picture icon to send a pic, it allows you to drill down to the exact folder, and "select all" for a mass send from a certain folder. (That's great because i don't want my photos getting all mixed up across 10 folders)......BUT! How can I select a certain folder and grab all the videos (in a single folder) and send? When I choose "send a video" - it searches my phone, grabs all my videos and mixes them together on one screen. I don't want to mix all those files. I'll be here for hours afterwards trying to get all my videos back in their correct folders on the PC. Thx for your time with this!

Oh wait!!!! If I choose BACKUP, will it grab everything on my phone and keep the folder structure when it appears on my laptop? Please say yes!!!! :)

Well.... I just tried that.... "BACKUP" does not grab the entire phone.... it only grabs 1 certain folder.... which is GREAT NEWS! That will keep my file structure atleast.... and I'll just backup each folder, 1 by 1. Here goes........

I can't help with anything on windows (I only use Linux), so the questions in your other posts I'm afraid I can't answer. However...

I have all my computers networked, and I read/write to them all the time from my Android devices. If you're already set up for networking, you should be able to access your computers' hard drives very easily, with most file managers. Then you can copy (or move) entire directory/subdirectory structures at once. I do this routinely. Are you networked?

Ummm.... hold on.... I'm not speaking about "windows" ---- I'm talking about the airdroid app. How can I backup the entire phone, in one transfer and it keep the folder structure? When I go to 'backup' in the app, it only allows me to select 1 folder at a time to transfer from the phone. If I have to move 1 folder's contents at a time, that's ok, but it's easier if I could do a complete backup that grabs all folders on the phone. I look forward to your input here. thx.

Yeah, you are. :o :) Airdroid's desktop client (that pairs up with the Android app's 'backup' function) runs on windows--which I don't use. I only use Airdroid's web browser method I described earlier.

My bringing up networking takes Airdroid out of the equation. It's a much simpler and more direct way of moving files and directories around.

As for a full backup of your phone...no. The only way I know of doing that is with a Nandroid backup. This article explains what it is. But as I recall, it's only for rooted devices. (I haven't rooted an Android device in years, so I'm pretty much out of the loop.)

To summarize: anything having to do with windows, including Airdroid's desktop client, I can't help with. If you're networked and can connect to your computer(s) from your phone, I can help. (But not about windows networking...I don't know if that's still as awful as it once was, but, no. However, other people here can help. :D)

I see what you're saying now.....
I just tried to do a 'backup' of my DCIM folder (which also contains several other folders filled with pics and vids.... guess what? It ONLY grabbed my photos. Uhhg. Looks like there's no way to not mix hundreds of videos from all my folders on a transfer. I don't think this will work for me. I'm going to call support tomorrow - if they have a number. Thanks!
