Root Please Help

Hey. First time poster here. I have an EVO that I attempted to root the other night using a tutorial on youtube. I downloaded the unrevoked files and went through the process and (I thought) correctly rooted my phone. I saw the SuperUser Permissions and all so I know it was done at one point. I just went to flash a new ROM to the phone and when I booted up to the HBOOT it went through the update and asked me if i wanted to reboot the phone. I said no and from that point went to select recovery and got the Red Triangle/Exclamation point. I then took the battery out and booted the phone up normally and it's back to the original settings (all my apps and custom screens are gone) and the SU Permissions icon is gone now. Obviously I've messed this up somehow.

At this point, I wouldn't mind unrooting the phone, but if a way can be explained that I can fix the root and have the phone to where I can add a different ROM, I would love that.

I apologize in advance for this, but if you could be as basic as possible with your explanations, I'd appreciate it. I guess I've gotten into something that I'm not quite that technologically advanced for.

Oh well, I guess you have to break some eggs to make an omelette.

It sounds like you have a broken recovery or there was a PC36IMG file that when you booted to hboot, it flashed it. Do you still have s-off? If so, we can flash a recovery and get you the rest of the way rooted.

I am going to assume that you do have s-off still. You will need to download a recovery image from this link http://www.mediafire.com/?gijd69zb5222w

Either Clockworkmod 2.6.0.1 or AmonRA 2.3(most prefer amon ra 2.3). Download the zip file, rename it PC36IMG.zip(make sure it is not accidently named PC36IMG.zip.zip as windows hide extensions), place it on the root of your sdcard(top level, not in a folder). Boot into hboot and when it finds the file tell it to flash it. When its done, do not reboot but select recovery and see if you have a working recovery now.
 
Welcome to the forums. This is the same problem I had and it is quite an easy fix.

First off check and make sure your security is off to do this go into HBOOT and it should have something saying S-off or S-on. If it says S-off then you are good and we can go to the next step.
 
Yep, at some point, you put a PC36IMG.zip file with the contents of a RUU on your card. That particular file wiped out your ROM with a completely stock one, and wiped out your recovery. Very likely, you still have S-OFF (check anyway). You most definitely need a custom recovery again, which is quite easy to do as Xtreme and Urge said, however, we need to know what that PC36IMG.zip file contained. So...

1) What is your current hboot version? It will say if you go to hboot.
2) What are your current baseband radio and PRI versions? If you go to menu->settings->about phone->software information, it will tell you.

If you flashed a very old RUU, you might have downgraded your radios. It's not a huge deal, but you'll need to upgrade them again.
 
Hey guys. I appreciate the advice. I actually had a buddy of mine take a look at it right after I posted. He hooked me up right to unrevoked.com and got it rooted in a couple minutes. I'm now running Cyanogenmod ROM. I'll definitely be in the forums looking for advice!
 
Sounds good :). Just one last thing - if you still have that PC36IMG.zip file on your card, rename it or remove it, or it will prompt you to flash it every time you go to hboot. That can be annoying, and flat out devastating if you accidentally flash it and haven't backed up. Save yourself the hassle, and remove it if you haven't yet.
