Hopefully we can help you sort it out.

First

Install "sensor sense" from playstore and check if the sensors are working.

Of they are not it should maybe go back for repair, but you could also try using this

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=nl.fameit.rotate

A factory reset is the last course of action before repair since they would do it anyway.

Hopefully it's a software issue :)

I can rotate my screen in any direction except upside down. That doesn't work and I'm not concerned about it.

I have updated to 4.4.2 and I've not seen any issues at all.

Have you tried turning the device off and removing the battery for up to about 10 minutes to see if it will fully reset the environment.

I've seen or heard of this helping others.
 
Thanks, Tom. Haven't tried taking the battery out for a while; will try it tomorrow. Screen rotation worked for a 90
 
Tom, thanks for the suggestion to take the battery out for ten plus minutes. I should have tried it sooner as I used to have to do that with the Blackberry I had before this phone. I am using the Zerolemon battery and case, so it takes a few minutes to disassemble
