Hi there,

New here but had to sign up and get some help from someone before I go mad, (is that how a nice new phone should make you feel) anyways I got myself a galaxy s4 yesterday and since getting it all I have done is found problems after problems, the two main issues I have right now are, 1. for some reason, no matter what I try, I cannot get mobile data to work to browse the internet (using wifi works fine) just not 3G etc, I just get an error saying there is no signal when I have full bars, 2. now this one is a bit strange, for some reason my phone when I first switch it on will allow calls/textes for about 5mins, but then after that if you try calling my phone it just goes straight to voicemail, even though my phone is turned on and has full bars, if I then just from WCDMA to GSM only it works fine, and seems to continue to work fine, now is this phone just one big mistake or is there some simple solutions to this, I just want to enjoy my new phone, which I haven't done yet. :(

Hi

Hi and Welcome to the forums! :)

I suspect the issue is just that it's all new at the moment!

Have you enabled mobile data?

Menu
Settings
Data
Tick the box (or you can enable it in the pull down panel)

When data is connected you should see a 3g or H or H+ in the status bar in addition to the phone reception bars - which you have not mentioned.

Hope this helps

Roger

When i enable the data no 3G or H+ appears next to the signal, also I am not sure if this problem is related but when I first switch on the phone it takes ages to find a signal, I hope I can get these issues sorted as I am close to getting rid of the phone, I just want to enjoy it. :(

Thank you for your post.

There are currently 23 different models of the Samsung Galaxy S4 and over 1,000 different stock Samsung firmware versions, worldwide, covering 3 different Android platforms. Not all issues will affect all models or firmware releases and your answers to the following question/s will help in the forum's answers to your specific query.

#1 Could you post your Model number and Android version...

To locate these, go to...

Settings > More > About device > Model number and Android version

This will give you the model of Samsung Galaxy S4 that you have and which Android version you are on.

#2. Your current Firmware, (not just Baseband), version .

To locate your current firmware version, go to the stock, Samsung, dial pad and type in...

*#1234#

This will give you your, "Version", details in full, usually 3 lines of information, AP: CP: CSC:, which may all be relevant.

*** If code *#1234# has been disabled on your firmware, you can download and install, free from the Play Store, Phone Info and it will give you, under Firmware Info... PDA, Baseband, CSC, versions.

#3. Also helpful would be your carrier, (service provider), location, (UK, India, Russia, USA, etc: ), and if your phone is rooted or not and running a custom ROM, (give details).

Thanks. The above helps us to help you and hopefully someone will be able to reply to you shortly. :)

(Tip: You can go to the green bar at the top of this forum and click on, "User CP", which will take you to your User Control Panel and then select, "Edit your details", under the heading, "Your profile", on the left hand side. Here you can fill in your model and firmware under, "Current devices", in, "Additional Information". This ensures that your device details are shown under your user name on the left, in every post you make. You can update this as often as you like and will help other users immediately identify your current phone and firmware details.)

Thanks tommy_boi. That information tells me that you have a UK, CSC code BTU, unbranded, phone running on the latest firmware.

Because the phone is carrier free and not on the 3UK firmware, H3G, I would first of all suggest contacting 3UK and asking them to forward the latest APN settings for your phone to ensure that they are correct.

Next, check your 3UK coverage for your area as it can be very patchy and the problems you are relating appear to be concerned with signal...

Check your coverage.

Also ensure that in Settings that you have enabled Mobile Data and in Settings > Connection > More > Mobile networks > Network operators (Pathway may vary), you have selected 3UK.

I have been on the 3 UK website and got them to send me the correct settings and I still have the problem connecting to mobile data, the thing is I have another mobile phone and I have put the sim card in that phone and it all works fine inc mobile data, so I am thinking it must have something to do with the S4 mobile phone, I have also been and checked the settings for mobile data to make sure it is selected and it is, still no good though. :(

Something else you can try is to check your received signal.

Settings > More > About phone > Status > Signal strength

The signal will be shown as -dBm and asu. The lower the -dBm and the higher the asu, the better. For instance, at my desk I am currently reading - 75dBm 19asu, (on HSPA/3G). Signals of more than -100dBm and single digit asu are considered weak and borderline on 3G.

By the way, signal bars on a phone do not really indicate anything as they are purely arbitary, depending on the manufacturer, as there is no industry standard. Therefore, an iPhone may show 5 bars whilst a Motorola may only show 3 bars for the same signal. This video explains it...

QI - Nobody Knows, The Meaning of the Signal Bars on your Phone

The only reliable method is the one described, using -dBm and asu. A very useful app for determining your signal strength is, Network Signal Info, free from the Play Store as it gives a very good, visual, readout for your signal and Wi-Fi as well as showing your tower, (mast), location.

Tommy, I'd suggest your problems are all ones 3 should be able to sort-out. If you bought the phone through them then it might be worth simply popping into one of their shops and get it sorted.

If you bought the phone yourself it may be worth giving 3's customer service a ring (yeah. I realise you'll need to have plenty of time and patience of Jobe). They may simply take the details of your new phone down and/or send out a new SIM.

I had a perfectly good SIM card in my HTC Desire but O2 had to replace it to get my S4 working fully.

Just checked and it is reading -71 dBm and 21 asu, I have also been on the 3 website and put in my IMEI no. so they know they are sending the settings for the right phone and the settings got sent but the data still didn't work, maybe like you say I do need a new sim card, even though like you say, my sim card works perfectly in my old Xperia phone.

Update:

Just tried another working sim card in the galaxy S4 (it was a pay and go one from another network) and the mobile data worked straight away once I had installed the settings that got sent to me via text message, also when I switched on the phone the signal appeared almost instantly, with the Three sim card sometimes it takes up to 5 mins for a signal to appear, so what does that say the problem is, my three sim card?.
