Which method are you trying to use?

Whichever method it is, the best thing to do is to start a command prompt window (start and type "cmd" in the search box and press enter). Then you need to use the "cd" command to change the working directory to the place where you stored the rooting files. For example, if you stored those files in a folder called "android" on your C: drive, at the prompt you would type:

cd \android

to change the working directory to c:\android. Then there will be a .bat file that runs through the rooting commands - type the name of that .bat file (a .bat file is a batch file - just a text file of commands that will be run at the command prompt, one after the other) at the command line and it will find the adb.exe file.

One last thing: the old Pete Souza one-click method no longer roots the Droid 3 if you update to the latest update 5.7.906 in the last month or two. The Motofail method works, though.

Security Research by Dan Rosenberg

It says it is for the Droid 4, but it works with the D3 as well.

Remember to turn on USB debugging on the phone first (settings->applications->development).

ok thanks guys that must be it because i did get a new phone recently.
is it the same process as the pete one?

I don't understand your question, but all you need is the drivers set up and your phone recognized in order to run Motofail. Also make sure you use safestrap before you flash any ROMs.

Rooting the D3 wasn't exactly like rooting my Thunderbolt, but if I can do it you can too.

(I'm a n00b to rooting the D3)

Pretty much. You need the Moto drivers installed. As I said, make sure that USB debugging is set on on the phone. You can try double-clicking the "run.bat" file after you unzip the motofail for windows file, though, as I said above, if you see adb.exe not found error messages you may need to run it from a command prompt.

If it succeeds it will reboot the phone a couple of times and then say at the end that it completed.

As suggested above. if you are thinking about installing custom ROMs,you may want to think about using Safestrap. It's here: How-To Safestrap

There is a guide toward the end of page 2 of the ultimate droid3 root thread that worked for me.

Make sure you are in debug mode
connect ph to comp in charge only mode.
use motofail and run as administrator.
