root allows you superuser access to your android phone that enables you to run custom apps, kernels, os, tweaks and hacks that normally you would not be able to run.

this can increase the speed, performance, functionality, and look of your phone.

be warned though: while its a fairly straightforward process...root voids your warranty with verizon and can lead you down a path (if you arent careful or responsible with this information) that can destroy your phone...that said, its virtually impossible to permannetly brick this phone

Don't root or mess with your phone if you are a novice. Having to ask is not a good sign.

That is sound advice. I have developed Android apps for the corporate enterprise, and I STILL waited over a month to root, flash, etc. I wanted to make sure I read, re-read, and re-re-read every post related to the process. And made sure I understood the implications, felt comfortable with the endeavor on this device, and knew how to back out of it if needed.

You can have fun and customize the device with the many launchers available without rooting.

.. You have to start somewhere.... We were all novices at one time.

That being said, don't take rooting lightly, please research and research some more before rooting.
