i want to keep itunes for now since I have my podcasts subscribed as i like them.

I keep seeing that I should use isyncr if i want to continue to use itunes.. but do I need an SD card before I starting synching my podcasts/music to my captivate?

or can't I just use the on board memory to store the podcasts/music?

You can use the onboard memory.

However:

1) Note that DRM-protected files in iTunes can't be played on the Captivate
2) There are really good podcast apps for Android, such as BeyondPod.
