It just is on its own unfortunately, I just took mine off the charger around 9:30pm, and I only text'd a few people a few times and now my battery already dropped a hair. I recommend you try Juice Defender, you can download a free version from the market. Indeed it does, it's amazing how much battery life is preserved just from disabling the data.
