Help Poor Battery Life

Newbie
Ive almost had my Galaxy S a month now. Ive only charged it to 100% once and that was yesterday. I have noticed that it loses about 1-2% every hour when its locked, about 3% every 10 mins when im on the internet. Is this normal? At the moment its on 69% since it was 100% charged 15 hours ago. Ive only sent a few texts and surfed the net for about 20 minutes.

That sounds pretty normal to be honest. You don't get 2 days battery life from a smart phone if you use it. Try turning off the background data and auto syncing because if they are on, it is continually sending and receiving info even when you think it is sleeping.

Thanks for the reply Liam. I think i have background data and auto sync turned off, but incase im wrong, can you tell me how to? Ive mostly been charging my phone when it gets to around 15% and ive never let it completely die. Also, i have only a couple of times let it charge to 100%. Is it ok doing this?

Go into the settings menu and then accounts and sync. Just uncheck both options. You can turn it on when you want to so that your apps can update or just press and hold the power button and deactivate data network mode when you aren't using the phone. This turns off all data networks but lets you take calls and texts :)

You are fine doing what you are doing with regards charging, however you can charge it to 100% everytime.

Does flight mode save battery life? If i put it in flight mode and recieve a message or phone call, will it come through when i disable it?

Using flight mode will cut everything. May as well turn the phone off. No messages or calls.

Just turn off the data networks.

Im sure there is something wrong here. My battery life is at 40% after 19 hours of being fully charged, and its been been locked most of the time. Ive only sent a few texts and surfed the net for 30 minutes. It now seems to be going down about 4% every hour.

Thats fine. Mine was taken off charge when I woke up at 6.30 this morning. It was at 40% when I arrived home at 6pm. Thats the way with smart phones. They use lots of battery power on big bright displays and powerful processors. Get used to daily charges.

I find if i take mine off charge as soon as it peaks at 100% it drains real quick. I find best deal is let it hit 100 over night and soak until morning.
Auto sync is a huge drain. i leave mine off except for IM ap WhatsApp.
Theres oodles of tips about extending batt life in these posts - have a sift..

Hi, I am having the same problem. I have 100% at 8.00am and by 3pm my battery is almost totally gone. If I turn Background data and Auto-sync off, will I still receive pingchat and facebook messages and notifications? When I go into the facebook sync settings I notice it only refers to the calendar and contacts but i'm not bothered about those anyway.Cheers

No, if you want constant updates from social network sites then you need to leave them on. Are you using 3g or wilan? Also, is your bluetooth/gps etc etc all turned off?

I'm not sure what wilan is mate. I have my bluetooth and wifi both off unless i know i'm in a wifi zone and need to use it.I use pingchat regularly and facebook as well so its not really convenient for me to turn them off in that case. Is it just a case of i'm going to have to put up with only getting 7-8 hours max battery life?? seems a shame because its putting a negative view on a phone i love

sorry chap, I meant wifi. Dunno why I wrote wilan lol..

7 or 8 hours is a bit poor but it you are using those apps alot then that is the reason. You won't find a phone that will improve that much and you can't do much more than turning stuff off when it is unused as you are doing. Getting rid of live or brightly coloured wallpapers can help as well. Even use a plain black one. The displays use alot of juice even with the brightness turned down.

mgee8,
Make sure to put the screen brightness on Auto, turn-off the GPS when you are not using it. Change the screen time-out to the lowest you can put it on.
You can also try to by a larger battery for the phone.

I have set my Galaxy for what I believe to be just for just phone calls and turn the other items on when so required and get upto five days of battery life. I turn OFF (1) Mobile Networks/Use Packet Data, (2) Location and Security/Use Wireless Networks/Use GPS sensors/Use Sensor Aiding and (3) Accounts and Sync/Background Data/Auto Sync. I do accept that there are those who will say why bother with the Galaxy if you only want to make calls, I accept that criticism, but it is my usage that dictates that - only using the facilities at the time I need them. I would be interested in advice as to what functions do the items 1, 2 and 3 in themselves actually control?

Thanks for the advice :) I have already got my brightness settings to auto and always have my GPS off though. You'd have thought with all the new features and technology they have got on these smartphones that they would be able to make a battery that can handle everything without having to turn different things off. I went back to phones4u a few days after I first got it and the guy told me to get that advanced task killer thing but i'v read a few posts on here saying it does more harm than good. Long gone have the days my first motorola took AA batteries and lasted 3 weeks before needing charging!! lol

Did you buy a phone with a computing element (Nokia)
Did you buy a computer with a phone element (Gallaxy)

If the first choice then longish battery life
If you bought the second then 2 days is a good life for a portable computer

I agree with redrover having 2 days of battery is very good for this type of device, you have a 1GHz processor, 512MB RAM, Large 4 inch screen, internet, GPS... that is move features than some of my old computers, and it can make phone calls.

This morning at half 7 my battery life was at 21%. I charged it till 8am and it was at 42%. 8hours later it is now at 15% and it has been locked the whole time. Should this be happening?

I only got my Galaxy just over a week ago. I have noticed that turning off Wifi makes a huge difference. My phone lasted a full day while i was at football. Where as yesterday just sat on my desk with occasional use it went down loads.

How do you display the battery as a %?

Sounds normal to me. You get into the habit of charging it upto 100%.
