Help Poor Network Connections/Sim Errors

Hi all,

My friend gave me his Desire HD complaining that people can't get hold of him on it, and texts come through delayed. So he got a new phone and I got a free one! :D

Now just trying to solve this problem, these only happen when the phone isn't showing full signal, if it has all bars full it's fine...

Symtoms (When signal not displayed as full):
  • No calls can be recieved, no missed calls appear on log (Other end sometimes rings, and sometimes says my phone is unavailable)
  • Texts come through, but sometimes delayed (Max has been 30 minutes)
  • Can't adjust 'Additional Settings, Call Barring' and other network settings - phone shows "Network or Sim Card Error".
  • Can't make calls, it endlessly dials or beeps and hangs up.
  • Probably a few others as well, just can't think right now.
Things I've tried and tested:
  • Sim in other phones works fine. All sims have this problem only in this phone.
  • Sim re-seating doesn't work.
  • Various other settings such as wi-fi/blutooth mitched and match, doesn't effort it.
  • Switching in out of Airplane mode as been suggested from other forums doesn't work.
  • Network Modes, no difference.
  • Only one network selected in the phone, so it can't switch between them.
  • Phone has been Hard Reset twice, no difference.
Could this just be down to a poor antenna? I could try replacing the sim Cover which I believe is the antenna.

Also thinking of trying a Custom ROM of JellyBean to see if that makes any difference.

Anyone else got any suggestions?

Cheers for you help.
Rory.

I think getting the software info and the radio info could be helpful.

Very strange. I'm sure that's the same radio I had on my DHD and I never had any problems with signal, even with custom roms I never changed it to anything else. You could try another antenna cover but I'm not sure that's the solution. Seems your stuck in 2G mode if the network type is showing G or EDGE.

Turns out my Step Brother has the same phone which I didn't realise. And no, swapping the Antenna cover didn't work. It still worked fine for his phone and mine still didn't work.

How do I got about trying to sort out the EDGE then.

Also would changing any of the settings under Access Point Names help at all?

Nothing wrong with having the EDGE connection or E near your signal bar. EDGE is basically 2G mode, but a little faster with multiple connections. What carrier are you with? I don't think changing your APN will help but you could try an app off the google play store called Tweaker......
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tweakker&feature=search_result

Also long as your wifi is working it will download the current APN for your network etc. Best to write down your existing settings beforehand just in case for some reason the new settings don't work.

If that don't make a difference then it would point to a hardware fault. I can't see why when you have full signal everything works as it should and when you dont...it don't. When you do have full signal what does network type show as, can you select 3G (HSPA)???

Okay will try that App when I have a mo. I've seen that E appear a few times but not so recently. and I've never seen any options to select HSPA.

I live in Jersey, Channel Islands. So I'm with Jersey Telecoms, we only have three providers over here and you can't use another companies signals.
