Poor reception

Cogs

Newbie
My Desire is about three months old.

Overall reception is low to non existent most of the time.
It has never been successful for Internet use and often the voice call quality is poor.

I am on the Optus network in Australia.

Today I replaced the SIM card with a new one as the Optus tech suggested this.

There is no improvement.

Before returning the phone to be looked at does anyone have any ideas about this or experienced the same problem.

Cheers

Have u tried using another phone on the same network in the same place? It could just be that the network doesnt cover the places u visit regularly

Is it an unlocked handset? If so try another network sim in it and if signal improves you know it won't be a problem with the phone but a problem with the network.

You could try being on 2g network, instead of 3g. This is the case with me. Where I live, the 3g network is very weak, and I am lucky if I get 2 bars. So I switched to 2g only, and I have full bars all the time.

If this doesn't work, a more drastic measure could be to root the phone, and flash new radios (check root FAQs). I've flashed a couple radios, and found some actually improve my signal.

Hope this helps.

I have the same problem with 3, Virgin (optus) changed to Telstra (stupid I know) still only get 0-1 bars in my lounge but during a call it's is a lot better at least I don't have to seat near the window to hear.

Comnet Solutions

This is my next move If Telstra's nextg starts to play up, but there provider specific.

As others have suggested, see if you can try another SIM in the phone or try another phone with your SIM to see if it's network or phone related. I've found the Desire to have very good RF performance, so unless yours is defective, then I'd say it's a network issue with signal strength.

Have tried all of the above suggestions except rooting the phone.

I am seriosly thinkig it is a network issue as I was in Shellharbour near wollongong,NSW the other day and boy the www was fast and not a strong signal either.

Two days ago I was in Batemans Bay and it was a very strong signal.

I live near Nowra, 35000 people and reception sucks.

Time to rattle Optus' cage again I think.

My experience is the telcos like to blame the customer's equipment and get them to doubt it.

Not wrong there I'm chasing Telstra about sign strength at home, emailed 5 days no reply, phoned 3 times 2-3 days to reply (not likely), it's there phone and there nextG ntework so no blaming the phone.

My son was home yesterday just after I made a phone call with full receptio on my Desire.

He has an iPhone 4 and he could not get any reception.

In Sydney my phone was A1.

Definitely is a network problem and not the handset.

Oh how the telcos are so quick to blame everything but themselves.

They're no better than insurance companies.

Smart phones in general do tend to have slightly poorer reception than your older basic phones have. The difference should be very slight though and only noticable in poor reception areas.
