Yeah I find it interesting too and I wonder if it comes down to manufacturing issues. Maybe the grounding issue, which I don't have. My WiFi signal is currently showing one to two bars and my router is in my warehouse. I am upstairs and it is going through concrete walls and my Speedtests are between 14000kbps and 17000kbps Up and 3500-3900 kbps uploads. It is worth noting my speedtests were a bit slower before my hard reset the other day. I am using a Linksys 610n with antenna running at 5 ghz n only and one at 2.5 ghz mixed mode with WPA2-Personal security mode and WPA-TKIP or WPA2-AES encryption on ch 11 with no wireless phones around. My home setup is around the same but with the Linksys E3000. same exact band setups except channel 1 and I am closer. Speedtests about the same
First, thanks for the info. I appreciate it.
Second... wow.. I just discovered something. Maybe this is a common thing in smartphones, I don't know. But based on swatpup102's tip, I downloaded wi-fi analyzer and found something very interesting. First thing, I discovered my signal is actually pretty weak in my office (router is one floor above me and on other side of the house). Even though weak, it's apparently good enough for my laptop, etc.
The interesting part is that, when the evo is just sitting on my lap, the signal is about -80 dBm. When I wrap my hand around the back of it with my fingers gripping the sides (normal smartphone-holding position), the wifi signal drops down to well below -90 dBm.
(You mentioned the grounding issue.. as far as I know, I have not had that issue. I don't notice any touch screen sensitivity changes when the device is just sitting on something... but maybe it's still related or maybe my hand is made of impenetrable lead).
Maybe someone who gets good range could do the same test to confirm or refute my findings. This would tell me if I have a defective device, or just to be expected.
My guess, is that the same thing will happen to all EVO's... it just happens that location of my desk is right at the threshold of usable (but weak) wifi. If my desk was at an area with stronger signal, then I probably never would've noticed the drop in wifi strength when holding the device because, although weakened, would not be weak enough to drop the connection.
And for anyone else experiencing poor signal, maybe try putting the device down.
