Help Pop up & push notification ads suddenly appearing

I've started receiving pop up ads that appear on my screen asking my to download certain apps/games from the Play Store. Sometimes they'll appear in my notification bar in the shape of a little envelope. I downloaded an app to try pinpoint which app is causing this but everyone I run it, it says I don't need it - all I need to do is long-press on each ad and it'll tell me which app is causing it. However, this doesn't work. Everytime
I long-press, it just takes me to whatever app is being advertised in the Play Store.

Any tips?

Push Notifications can happen with Play Store apps (for another few weeks - Google have called time on them recently).
Install Addons Detector from the Play Store, scan the device then see which apps have Push Notification add-ons.

Ad Network Detector is pretty pretty good too. Glad google are finally clamping down on this crap. Hope it encourages devs to make apps worth paying for

Sounds like the dreaded AirPush stuff again. some apps won't even tell you or even define 'in-app ads' until it's too late and already installed--they used to but now that Play removes apps from their listings if it includes Airpush most of those devs alert you after you've already installed and launched it, or don't tell you at all and only have 'app-served' or 'in-app ads' in the description, vague as it is.

this is one reason i pay for apps if i can now.

Yeah me too. Id rather reward good behaviour and apps are really cheap even for a poor orphan like me.
Google should create a simple way of reporting things like this. Let us moderate the play store better
