Help portrait & landscape video quality

How come my phones video quality is better when I record in portrait compared to landscape?

Ummm.
Record in landscape and play it in portrait and it will squash the video, record in portrait and play in landscape and it will stretch, making it look worse.

Just a guess.

Ok what I didn't make clear was when I upload to YouTube when recording in portrait its in 720p but not when recording in landscape.
