Root Possible 4G/HSPA+ fix for L70s running roms.

*First I must say, I have the "MS323" with Metro PCS and I've only tried this process on this device, so I can't vouch for what this will do on other phones or even other variants of the L70 and before I tried this I did a complete system backup in recovery and I would recommend that anyone else do the same just in case. I'm not responsible for your phone...etc...etc...

If you've installed a custom rom on your LG L70 you've probably noticed that you're data signal indicator is now showing "3G" or even "H" instead of "4G" and if you're like me that kind of bothers you, so I did some playing around with my phone to see if there was any sort of fix or workaround for this. Now I understand this isn't a perfect fix, but until the functionality is somehow implemented into roms for the L70, this is what I came up with.

1) First I downloaded an app called "Network Monitor" just to see what connection my phone was actually using. Unfortunately, this app can not tell you anything right after you install it as it needs time to gather data, so I just installed this and then left it overnight so it would have some statistics to work with. The next day I booted up the app and sure enough it told me that I was only using a 3G/UMTS connection.

2) Well, I wasn't satisfied with this so I downloaded an app called "Advanced Signal Status" just to confirm that this was in fact true and apparently it was, as it only seemed to show evidence of 3G/UMTS. After checking this, I clicked on the "Additional Info" button in the app and navigated to "Phone Information/Set Preferred Network Type" and decided to try choosing "LTE/GSM auto (PRL)". I know the L70 is not an LTE phone, but I selected this one because it was the only potential 4G-like connection that seemed to allow for a broader spectrum of connectivity.

3) After that I wanted to make sure that my connection type matched what I'd chosen in GravityBox, so I opened my Android settings and navigated to "Mobile Networks/Access Point Names" and selected the APN profile called "MetroPCS LTE" and that was pointing to "fast.metropcs.com" and rebooted the phone.

4) Once rebooted I opened the "Network Monitor" app again to see if there was any change and was pleased to find that it had been using an HSPA+/4G connection for the last 6 minutes.

5) Then I went back into the "Advanced Signal Status" app and could see that it was alternating between the previous "UMTS/3G" connection and the "HSPA+/4G" connection. The icon in the statusbar, however, still shows "3G" and "H", but I think maybe that's only because my current rom is only designed to implement up to a 3G connection, so there may just not be the proper icons in the "systemui.apk". Could also be because I already went over my data limit with Metro PCS for this month, so I'm just not seeing it for that reason.

Anyhow, let me know what you guys think of this and if it does anything for you. I'm excited to keep checking the "Network Monitor" app myself just to see what percentage of 3G and 4G it's using over the next week or even month. Also, I worked hard trying to figure out any sort of solution to this problem, so if you want to show your appreciation for my time and for putting this post together by maybe donating a few bucks for a coffee via Paypal, then I'd truly appreciate it. Thank you! :)

So pretty much this is it to force it to connect to HSPA+ right? Little confused. If so, I think this can kill battery life if it's proritzing HSPA+.

Sadly I think few will try, everyone's on LP 5.1 and above, Xposed isn't supported in 5.1, I honestly think some people will downgrade. But not much for this fix.

This is to allow your phone to connect to HSPA+(4G) in the case where a rom may be forcing it to connect to only UMTS(3G) instead. Not really a complicated fix. You just need to be able to change your network mode & your APN to LTE, but simplified this tutorial to exclude the need for Xposed anyway just for you. ;)

Have you tried to type in *#*#4636#*#* in dialer, select "Phone info" and select "LTE/GSM auto (PRL)" from there? Bypasses the need to install any apps :)
Yes I tried all those codes before anything, but none of them work after you wipe stock Android from the device and my current rom(like most for this device it seems) only offers the selection of 2G or 3G in settings, which is why I think you need an app and why I made this post. Anyhow, the method I posted works, so that's all that really matters I suppose. :)

Whichever works is good, but FYI, the above code for secret menu works ;)

Wondering why you seem to be saying something different now than you did when we had this conversation on your rom thread a couple days ago before I figured this out? :/
ME:
Anyone know how to enter the "service menu"? I know we can't get 4G on this rom, but I just want to open up the menu and see what it says in there. Thank you.
YOU:
Secret service menu is stock rom feature.
I tried the code. Even right after you mentioned it. It does not work on your rom, at least for me. It didn't work on the last rom I had either. It did work on stock rom though yes. I repair phones for living. It's my job. Believe me when I say it doesn't work on my device. Also, the point of me making this thread is not to go back and forth about how to change network mode. The point is just knowing that you need to do it and to share the idea with people that using an LTE connection & APN restores some 4G functionality on these 3G roms, so hopefully we can focus on that. I don't care how people get to network mode. I was just giving them one method in case it wasn't working like mine. :)

First of all, there's no need to be defensive, I was not attacking you nor your thread, I was just trying to helpful.

Second, when you asked about secret menu, I thought you refered to LG's secret SERVICE MENU, which is called with following code: 3845#*320#
The above example is for d320👎. For d325, You replace 320 with 325, etc. This, as I said, works only on stock.

Now, the code I gave you in previous post *#*#4636#*#* is universal and works for all android devices. Here's a video of me doing it on my device (d320n):

There's no reason that it won't work on any other.

Third, I couldn't care less what you're doing for living. It certainly gives you no right to call me a liar. I won't post anything without doing it myself first.

Finally, I repeat that I posted what I did only to be helpful. That's all. Peace out.

Please stop with this argumentativeness on this thread. Really kind of unprofessional don't you think? Can't watch that video anyhow because it's marked as private, though a video is a bit unnecessary and a waste of your time I would think, as I already know how to enter those codes and have tried many times and they don't work on MY phone since I wiped it, which was all I was saying. Sorry if you thought I was being defensive. That was not my intent. All you're doing now though is continuing to derail my thread with the trivial matter of what way people use to change network mode, when it's supposed to be about getting some 4G speeds going and "what" to change, not "how". I would never do that on one of your threads. That is all.
