*First I must say, I have the "MS323" with Metro PCS and I've only tried this process on this device, so I can't vouch for what this will do on other phones or even other variants of the L70 and before I tried this I did a complete system backup in recovery and I would recommend that anyone else do the same just in case. I'm not responsible for your phone...etc...etc...
If you've installed a custom rom on your LG L70 you've probably noticed that you're data signal indicator is now showing "3G" or even "H" instead of "4G" and if you're like me that kind of bothers you, so I did some playing around with my phone to see if there was any sort of fix or workaround for this. Now I understand this isn't a perfect fix, but until the functionality is somehow implemented into roms for the L70, this is what I came up with.
1) First I downloaded an app called "Network Monitor" just to see what connection my phone was actually using. Unfortunately, this app can not tell you anything right after you install it as it needs time to gather data, so I just installed this and then left it overnight so it would have some statistics to work with. The next day I booted up the app and sure enough it told me that I was only using a 3G/UMTS connection.
2) Well, I wasn't satisfied with this so I downloaded an app called "Advanced Signal Status" just to confirm that this was in fact true and apparently it was, as it only seemed to show evidence of 3G/UMTS. After checking this, I clicked on the "Additional Info" button in the app and navigated to "Phone Information/Set Preferred Network Type" and decided to try choosing "LTE/GSM auto (PRL)". I know the L70 is not an LTE phone, but I selected this one because it was the only potential 4G-like connection that seemed to allow for a broader spectrum of connectivity.
3) After that I wanted to make sure that my connection type matched what I'd chosen in GravityBox, so I opened my Android settings and navigated to "Mobile Networks/Access Point Names" and selected the APN profile called "MetroPCS LTE" and that was pointing to "fast.metropcs.com" and rebooted the phone.
4) Once rebooted I opened the "Network Monitor" app again to see if there was any change and was pleased to find that it had been using an HSPA+/4G connection for the last 6 minutes.
5) Then I went back into the "Advanced Signal Status" app and could see that it was alternating between the previous "UMTS/3G" connection and the "HSPA+/4G" connection. The icon in the statusbar, however, still shows "3G" and "H", but I think maybe that's only because my current rom is only designed to implement up to a 3G connection, so there may just not be the proper icons in the "systemui.apk". Could also be because I already went over my data limit with Metro PCS for this month, so I'm just not seeing it for that reason.
Anyhow, let me know what you guys think of this and if it does anything for you. I'm excited to keep checking the "Network Monitor" app myself just to see what percentage of 3G and 4G it's using over the next week or even month. Also, I worked hard trying to figure out any sort of solution to this problem, so if you want to show your appreciation for my time and for putting this post together by maybe donating a few bucks for a coffee via Paypal, then I'd truly appreciate it. Thank you!
