Possible to just Root but not install a ROM?

Hi,

I just want to root my phone (get super user access) in order to make an application work. The app does Call Recording. The new ICS has removed the ability of many applications to record calls (used to work fine in previous OS version).

- Is there a way just to gain 'root' access, and install just that application? The developers say that once you have root, you just need to reinsall the app. I am guessing that this will reinstall the audio libraries.

- Or, is the only way to do it, to install an entirely new ROM?

Kies says version is: PDA:LP6 / PHONE:LPS / CSC:LP4 (XSA)
Android 4.03.
Baseband version I9100XXLPS
Kernel 3.0.15-I9100XWLP8-CL356487dpi@DELL173#3

Hi,

I did read that. It contains instructions on how to install a new ROM.
That's not what I'm trying to do.

I can't figure out what I should do different to those instructions to retain the ROM that I have but gain root/superuser access.

Thanks.

I'm sorry, but that guide contains instructions for rooting your phone. Hence the title... "Rooting Galaxy S2 - A Dummies Guide".

What is rooting?

Rooting gives you, "Superuser", access to your phone and its features. It allows the installation of the latest custom ROM's, kernels, modems, applications and features that are not available to un-rooted phones. All this process does is to replace the stock kernel, that comes with your phone, with a CF, (ChainFire), root kernel and does not affect any data stored on the phone.

I suggest re-reading it carefully and thoroughly, again. ;)
