Help Possible to use cell internet?

Yarnie1

I just got my Xoom without a contract. I rarely go anywhere there's not Wi-Fi available. What I'm wondering is can I use my cell's internet when Wi-Fi isn't available?

Thank you!

No problem at all. For info, search on "Tethering" in this forum. Basically, you set your phone to "hotspot" and then do a bluetooth pairing with your Xoom. Works great and no extra costs for me.

Thank you! I'll search tethering because I forgot to say I have the original Moto Droid. It doesn't have a hotspots option in the Tethering section of Settings. It's only option is USB.

I use bluetooth tether on the Xoom to access my DroidX's 3G data service all the time. It works great, although I seem to have some problems with file downloads.

These instructions from DroidLife should get you connected and browsing the internet in short-order.

Thank you very much! I am a bit afraid to root my phone, but I've wanted to for a while now. I'll probably do it, but when I'm ready to get my next phone. I'm waiting until end of this year. I read the gingerbread upgrade will be available then.

The hotspot and bluetooth tethering are different things. Hotspot makes your phone a wireless router - for which VZW wants you to pay another $20 on top of your unlimited data plan.

Bluetooth tethering lets you access that unlimited data via bluetooth. Connect via bluetooth (pair the devices and then connect, and then once connected, on the XOOM, select the settings for the BT connection and tap "Use for Internet")

Works on my DX, but I don't know if it'll work on all phones.
