Help Post Noob questions here

As a noob myself, I'm finding it hard to get answers without muddling up the threads where the devs and senior members are working so hard at more advanced issues. If you have noob questions, no matter how trivial, post them here. I know they will help me, and hopefully others. And who knows, maybe the bigshots will drop in every now and then to offer advice.
Currently running rooted LG Spectrum ICS OTA

First Question: Anyone install the emoji plugin for GoLauncher and sees only Chinese symbols on screen when using emoticons in text? I followed market directions EXACTLY to install twice...

Good morning Prince. I have a question about the forum itself. WHen you go to the forum on the taskbar, it lists all the forums by device. Next to the name of my phone, there are numbers displayed in this format, for example, 123/12345. It has to be the number of people in the forum, but I don't know if it is the number of people online, etc. What does it mean? Thanks for letting me post yet another NOOB question.

That's a bit of info about what's in the forum. (unread threads)/(total threads)

You'll be ok. I've done it from v8 several times. And as far as the bootloader, you have to run the root/unlock tool twice... Once to root and again to unlock bootloader.

OK I downloaded the ZIP of the PWNAGE tool, but when I tried to install to the C: drive, I kept getting an error message that it couldn't create the "readme" file.
So I deleted that from my C: drive and used the .exe version. It seems to have installed to my c: drive successfully. I hope everything I need is there. (can you tell yet how nervous I am?) LOL
Is that the reason the .exe file was created? (errors when installing?)
I am going to wait until I am off from work to actually run it, so I have time in case something else goes wrong.

Also, a lot of folks don't know about our FAQ area, which includes some really great threads like AndroidForums FAQ.

Lots of great info in and around there!

Cheers!

:)

Hello there SA. Got a question, something that probably isn't in the FAQs. Before I use the PWNAGE tool to root and install CWM on my phone, perhaps I should learn how to restore my phone to it's original stateby "cab flashing"?

I've heard that term before, did I get it right? Let me know what method I can use to restore my phone in case I mess it all up. I would appreciate it. I would also like to include the method and steps in the post I made for everyone else. I think it may be useful to our forum to have everything in one place. THANKS

Ah, I'm at a disadvantage here, KLEMBO, since I don't own or use an LG Spectrum (no root experience with it, I'm afraid).

While this thread is a great resource for new folks for all kinds of questions, root-related things would be best addressed in the Spectrum - All Things Root - Android Forums subforum where those that are experienced (some of which have posted in this thread) can best address those in there.

This thread is a little unique in that it contains both root and non-root questions--we've decided to not split those out here since there's a great mix of questions and answers here that surely benefits a large number of our readers. Many thanks and kudos to PrinceCorwin for starting and keeping-up with this thread :).

Follow the directions on this site to flash the cab

Run it once to root (gain administrative access on) your phone. Run it a second time to unlock the bootloader and install CWM (a custom recovery). After CWM is installed, you can boot into the custom recovery and make a backup. After you have a backup of your phone, you can wipe data and flash the ROM of your choice.

I guess it should be noted for you that when you make the backup, be sure to switch the format from the default (dup) to tar since our phones just don't seem to like dup that much.

I've discovered something troubing to me, I clicked on the link to VIRUS TOTAL, and the lastest scan of this showed the file had this in it. Trojan.AndroidOS.Generic.A I don't think it is a good idea to use it at this time. Have you heard about this?

I understand the caution and hesitation... It took me over 6 months to finally decide to root my Spectrum. And of course I had some hiccups... But the members here got me through everything.

I could only wish the RAZR HD (my new phone) forum members were as responsive and informative.

I definitely miss you guys!

It's a false positive. We've all used it. Trusted devs created it. Most "hack" styles programs are known for false positive virus detection.

Thank you for your reply Prince. I thought of that myself. Anyone with experience file sharing sees this kind of thing all the time. Most hacks in the Windows environment, and many other programs for that matter, will throw a false positive in your virus program due to the way it works. But, sometimes it really is a virus. Just have to be careful.
The reason I asked was that 8 months ago, the file did not show any type of virus, but 6 months later, one of the virus programs warns of a Trojan.
I thought that perhaps someone had altered it; perhaps through development, the changes that were made caused this false positive.
Makes me feel better when you say that it was crafted by trusted devs.
Thanks again.

Since you went through the experience, what kind of hiccups did you have? This is the only phone I can afford at this time, and I have to be careful. But I really feel rooting and eventually carefully de-bloating it will improve performance (or at least just make me feel better).

As long as you follow the instructions given with the pwnage tool and in the how-to part of ROM threads, you shouldn't run into any hiccups. Debloating will help a lot, if you plan to stay on the stock rom. Flashing a custom rom such as CyanogenMod or AOKP will improve performance a lot for you.

I will post any errors and solutions I encounter. I am still under the impression Bluetooth is just not an option on a rooted Spectrum?

Reason I replied: "Greedy, lying Verizon" :eating:

Nice. ... Here Goes.

My process to success:

(Windows 7 x64)

>Downloaded Pwn Tool (.zip) and extracted
>USB Debugging & Internet through Ethernet
>All LG Drivers installed
>Verified connection through adb ("adb devices")
>Rooted through Pwn Tool (bootloader_pwn.bat as administrator)
>Without closing the Tool it runs a second time.
>Before proceeding I checked I was rooted with a common root checker
>Pwned my boot-loader by continuing through second iteration of Pwn Tool
>Feedback from tool said CWM was installed (Up a bit in dialog)
>Backed up device with Titanium Backup
>Pushed CM 10.1.2 VS920 to /sdcard/ (adb push C:\---\cm-10.1.2-vs920.zip /sdcard/)
>Rebooted into recovery with adb ("adb reboot recovery")
>In CWM:
>Wiped data/factory reset
>Wiped cache partition
>Wiped Dalvik Cache (>Advanced)
>install zip from sdcard
>chose cm-10.1.2-vs920.zip from list
>rebooted w/ "reboot system now"
>Booted into CM 10.1.2
>Rebooted to recovery w/ adb again
>In CWM:
>Backup and Restore>Backup
>reboot system now

Done.

Phone completely functional, INCLUDING Bluetooth which I was under the impression was not going to be functioning.

Thoughts: Damn pleased and grateful to the members here who did all the hard work. Thanks devs/members!

Stay in Zazen,

Alex

I'm getting ready to flash my first ROM, (happens to be CM10.1.2 as well) this helps me to stay focused, and take my time (go slow, follow all steps, no boo boos) Thanks.

One question though. Is it OK to create a backup using TiB, or is it better to make a backup utilizing CWM? Which backup has less of a chance of failure? Or doesn't it matter? When I ran the tool, I didn't use TiB. (curiosity)

Do both. You'll use TB to restore all your apps, CWM backups your entire system in case something goes wrong and you need to restore.

TiB backs up individual apps, CWM backs up complete setup. Both have their good and bad points.

Could you give me an example of good and bad? I always thought that since I either install apps from the store or from saved files on my computer, I could always re-download or copy them to the SD card and re-install. I guess it is much faster to use TiB, don't have to re-install one at a time.

(P.S. I DID flash CM10.1.2 to my phone. I'm liking it already. I haven't noticed any problems yet, GPS is FAST, picks up satellites in 15-30 seconds. I'll leave it on for a while and see what happens. I have a copy of TWRP to try some other time.)

OK I am going to install TiB too. Thinking about it, over time I'll probably have more apps, and I can re-install them from one backup file instead of individually. Good advise, thank you!

Sorry, I guess saying "good and bad points" really isn't the right terminology. I should have said that the both have strong and weak points.

With TiB you can backup individual apps and their data so you don't lose anything for that app, like keeping the high scores of a game or saving all your text messages.

With CWM, you backup a complete setup. So if you install a new rom and absolutely hate it/nothing is working right, you can restore a backup made before you flashed the new rom to go back to a previous setup (whatever you had at the time you made the backup).

OK thank you, thats clear enough. It cannot hurt to do both, and someday I probably will be glad I did it. Thanks for the advice. (ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ just woke up)

I was toying with the idea of starting a new thread just for this, but I didn't want to use up valuable space, if the answer to my question already exists out there somewhere.

OK THEN, is there some way that we can have one place in this forum where, when someone releases a new rom, the download link can be listed with the appropriate GAPPS download link directly adjacent to it?

Or could someone please explain to me how to figure out which GAPPS version I need for each of these cool roms you guys keep creating? I'll tell you why I ask for this.

I just finished restoring my phone back to the stock rom for the second time today. No problems I can see with the roms I flashed (icy fusion 5.0, beanstalk, and pac man), but in each case, I am pretty sure I installed the wrong GAPPS file, essentially making the installation blow up.

When I installed the roms, they seemed to run fine, until I installed GAPPS, then they went, to borrow a term, wonky on me. In every case, I had to pull the battery to get control of the phone, and restore the stock rom. (That's because like the NOOB DUFUS that I am, I forgot to make a backup).

One more reason to do this; think about it, how many times, when reading through a thread in this forum, do you see someone break in and ask where can they download the latest version of such and such rom. Someone always provides a link to the file for them, but I think for us NOOBS out here, that having the latest stable version of all these great roms and the associated GAPPS file links with them would be a great time saver and help to all.
