potential buyer: GB/clock question

About to buy an INC2 and the clock issue seems to be the biggest negative.

1. What is the advantage of updating to GB? It seems to cause problems.

2. If I do update and have the clock problem, is it "solved" by downloading a 3rd party clock widget from the Android market or are all clocks unable to work?

We bought 3 Dinc2 phones 2 weeks ago and they already had GB installed. Fortunately, we have had no issues with the alarm clock.

If you have a DINC2, being updated to Gingerbread is pretty much a "you can run but you can't hide" thing. Sooner or later, VZW is going to update you.

The clock thing... I went through it, it made me nuts, I lost respect for HTC, Google, and VZW for their handling of the problem (that is, no handling that's made it into public use). At some point, the problem simply went away, the Clock app started working, and, as of this moment, still works.

What really happens when the app breaks? The widget, when you tap on it, no longer gives you all the cool features (alarm, timer, world time, etc.) and all you see on the screen is the time of day (and the weather, if you picked that version of the widget). I added Alarm Clock Extreme because I like its gradual volume increase feature and a couple of other minor toys, even though Clock is no longer broken on my DINC2. That's just how I roll.

So, there you are in the Verizon store (or Costco or about to pull the trigger on Amazon, etc.). You're sweating the decision to buy or not buy a DINC2. You're in analysis paralysis over the clock issue. Don't sweat it. Most people don't see the problem. My guess is that many of the people who do or did see it, myself included, went through an epic bout of adding and removing apps, pushing the install and uninstall buttons like a monkey on speed. Take your time, think your way through your choices on apps, and have a nice day.:)

Thanks, but in terms of my second question, will downloading a 3rd party app allow me to have an alarm clock and such even if the factory installed widget goes down?

Yes.

In fact, that was the most common work-around for the Clock app problem: install another alarm or timer app and use it in place of the lost Clock functions. The clock part (showing time of day) didn't go away in most cases where the app broke. It's the stuff you can get to through the app's widget that stopped working.
