power button intermittent

Hi. My HTC incredible power button doesn't always work when I want to totally shut down my phone. I know I have to hold it down for a few seconds to get the power off screen and it only sometimes works. It works fine when i press it for a second to get out of sleep mode. Does.anyone else have this problem? Any solutions? Thanks
 
Issue resolved. USER ERROR!

This is embarrassing...so it's my first smartphone and it works fine. I was trying to turn it off while it was locked. You can't do that. Once I unlock it, I can turn it off just fine... big time user error.
