If you Google for "use proximity sensor to wake phone" you will find "Smart Screen On", "Wave Control", "ScreenWakeUp", and other apps that use the proximity sensor to wake up the phone.
And there are apps like "Screen Off" that turn the screen off without using the power button.

Yes, "screen off" is a great app. You can wake up your screen by using the volume up or down button and turn the screen off by pressing a shortcut (I've made mine invisible and have one on my home screen and lock screen), often much easier options than using the power button. I even use this app on my tablet where the case does sort of impinge on the power button.

I am using the "Screen Off" app written by KATECCA.
