power consumption

Hi, I went from Los Angeles to Vegas and I was using the GPS app and had my mobile data on. I had it plugged in but when I got to Vegas my power was down to 6%. Then at another time I was playing Real racing 3 and had it plugged in and it shut off while I was playing. Is there something wrong with my battery or do some apps use more power then the system can take in or something wrong with the charging wire or...? I find that hard to believe that the apps take more power then can be recharged, but from my limited experience I am thinking so. BTW I have a Samsung G3

You are consuming more power than the charger is providing. Thats why the battery dies.

You need a good quality charger that outputs at least 1A. Many cheap chargers only put out 250-750ma (0.25 to 0.75A). A Good quality charger can put out as much as 2 to 2.5 Amps.

I frequently use my S3 has GPS on 300 to 400 mile trips and always arrive at the destination with a full charge. I also stream pandora via BT, and setup my phone to act as a wifi hot spot for the kids tablets in the back seat. All that and the charger is still able to keep up.
Phone does get hot at the end of the trip.

Get yourself a mount that allows you to stick the phone in front of one of your vents. Even at a low fan speed setting, there is enough to keep the phone cool. Your phone will thank you in the long run.

As for charging and driving - to answer the OP - most car cigarette lighter plugin charger are insufficient for the S3. I use a small 12volt inverter that has both a wall outlet plug and 2 USB ports, so I can charge anything I want just as if I was home plugging into a regular wall outlet. And they are small enough to easily be concealed in your center armrest. When I go on long trips I have my S3 and my wife's Note 2 charging on this inverter without issue. I could probably plug in a mini fridge too. :D

1470mA is the "safe" maximum

I was using the ac charger that came with the phone and you would think that that charger would at least be 1470 MA. Oh well, Thanks everyone

The only thing ive ever had (i dont drive) drain my battery faster than the stock AC charger can charge it is streaming vids to the TV with MHL-HDMI adaptor. I dont think a game should do it..

Was it you who told me how to increase the draw of charging current with a tweak SU mate?
I think that fixed the HDMI problem for me (i also tend to underclock when streaming vid)
