Root Pre-rooting questions

Hi, I'm reading all the guides and FAQs intending to root shortly, *Would appreciate a bit of clarification on some things.
- In the guide to rooting using un-revoked there are the prerequisite steps to do with the Hboot drivers, then the next section states you should turn on the Desire normally. After step 9 what should be done before moving to the Rooting Process?
- 'not accepting OTA updates' *- *if I don't flash a new ROM can I get updates any other way? Do I need to?
- I've seen somewhere that I should verify the integrity of any file I might flash, and check file size and (MD5) checksum is OK. *Is there a method to do this or is it obvious when I get to that stage?
- Is internal memory an issue when rooting using un-revoked? I've currently got about 12mb but could delete some stuff to increase it
- I presume there are no contstraints on what network/sim I use, I'm currently in the process or moving from Orange contract to Giffgaff which runs on O2
- Does rooting itself clear any internal memory or is it only flashing a new ROM that increases the Apps to SD card options

Many thanks for any help

Nothing. The guide is linear. If there was something else, it would be step 10, or before "Turn on the desire so it is running android normally."

No. If you want a more up-to-date ROM, you must flash one. Unless your carrier sends some bloat out, I don't forsee any new updates coming your way. You really should go custom ROM though, especially if memopry is a reason for rooting.

There is a link in the "All things root guide" sticky thread to an MD5 FAQ. Definitely should read that

Yes, if you can get to around 20MB at leas, maybe 25, it will help.

Correct

- Does rooting itself clear any internal memory or is it only flashing a new ROM that increases the Apps to SD card options

Not at all. It is simply a means to an end. It gives you Admin permissions is all. Please read the root memory faq, linked in the "All things root guide" sticky thread.

Thanks for the fantastically quick response. I appreciate it must get a bit tiresome having to keep saying 'check the FAQ' and I have, but there's so much info it's sometimes a bit confusing even if your ok with tech, and hard to visualise sometimes when you are not doing the process.

Sorry, I had missed that

I get everything you say except for the first point

After step 9 do I switch the phone off and then on again while connected to the pc?
Really appreciate the fact that you're still around to help all us inadequates. :o

Follow the guide in order and you won't go wrong. There's nothing in the guide between those 2 steps because there is nothing to do between those 2 steps. The guide is complete

I'm sorry, but I must be missing something that is obvious to everyone else.
From
Boot into Hboot screen (from off, hold volume down and press power)
through
Check Android Bootloader Interface is listed under Android Phone in device manager.
and
***Please note, This Hboot driver only works correctly when the phone is in the Hboot screen. If the device is not at the hboot screen, the driver will not show correctly as essentially the device is not present.

to
Turn on the desire so it is running android normally.
Where does the phone get turned off (as this is emphasised to be a real no-no to do at the wrong time) and is this all done connected to the PC?
Thanks again

Thanks, and apologies for the hassle, but it doesn't SAY that and there are many warnings about not switching the phone off at the wrong moment.
