"preceding msg modified, Media objects were removed"

Not sure the best location for this message ... but here it is.

I searched the forums and got a couple hits with the phrase, but no resolution.

I get the message, "preceding msg modified, Media objects were removed", when my brother in law sends me a long message (greater than 160 chars). He also receives back a notification that I can't receive the message and that it has been sent as plain text. I have read that normally this means that there is an inbedded image with the text that can't be decoded as sms (such as a nonstandard emoticon). This is (at far as I can tell) not the case here. I still get his whole message, broken into multiple peices, labeled after his name as 1/2 and 2/2. I just get the notification after it, as does he. He also has a desire, but his is rooted, and he installed a froyo ROM (mine is still eclair). We are both on Alltel so this isent a carrier specific thing.

Now, here is where it get's really weird. My wife also has a desire (of course on alltel) with the same OS version as I do. She receives long messages from him fine. Neither of them get a notification. It doesn't even break up the messages on her phone, she gets the whole thing as a block. Also if she sends me a long message I receive it in two parts (although no 1/2, 2/2 labels) and vice-versa.

I suspect when my wife and I send long messages our phones are breaking them up before sending (thus to 1/2, 2/2), but why on earth can she receive long messages and I can't? Same phone, same carrier, same OS, and I don't think I changed any sms settings.

What gives?

Nobody has ever seen this? I have other questions too but if I ask anything complicated I never seem to get a response.
