price?

If you're asking for guesses. $599 and data plans will be month-to-month (i.e. no discounts for 1 or 2 year term)

That's the deal killer for me. I desperately want an android tablet over the iPad, but I don't want to pay a monthly fee for data service. Will they sell a non-branded model with wifi only?

The XOOM looks great. This is much better than the galaxy tab hardware wise. Consequently I worry how much these Tegra 2 10" pads will cost considering the price of a galaxy tab. I hope the appeal of these pads aren't spoiled by being significantly more expensive than ipads.

You obviously didn't understand my post. I don't believe data plans will be required. They aren't required for the Galaxy Tab or the iPad/MiFi combo through Verizon.

As for a Wi-Fi only version, it will be a long time (if ever) before that is available. Honestly, it's pointless to release a Wi-Fi only version if they don't require data contracts for purchase.

You don't need to be condescending. Your post was poorly worded amigo.

I am not seeing how he was condescending? I truly do not think you understood his answer.

If Wifi - There is not point for a contract. It will probably be sold (speculation) like the Galaxy Tab. You buy and have to get at least one month, then cancel, just like the 3g ipad.

That is a very condescending way to say something. He said he thinks the data plan would be month to month, but didn't say anything about getting one and -not- having a data plan.

Sorry if I took it the wrong way, but as with all Internet posting there is no inflection. It sounds like it is read.

Why is it pointless? Apple has sold a ton of Wi-Fi only iPads, I own one. I dont want anything to do with Verizon and their plans and neither do many others. I can run my iPad on 4G from my Evo or Sprint Overdrive. You cant even buy a 4G iPad. I would be able to run the Xoom the same way and get unlimited internet, not some lame 2GB or 5GB cap like I would using Verizon's slow 3G service. Selling Xooms that force you to buy a capped plan with Verizon would greatly limit its sales and success.

I have to agree with Mbell, I don't want to be dependent on Verizon for anything that has to do with my shiny new tablet. It seems that I'm unfortunately not going to have much choice with that.

How will you be strapped to or dependent on Verizon in any way when you will probably be able to buy the Xoom with no contract whatsoever?

Anyway, that's cool, you guys can wait until April and buy the Wi-Fi only Xoom on eBay from some guy in Argentina. Even if it is available on Moto's site for normal purchase, don't expect it to be any cheaper than Verizon's version. The only reason the Wi-Fi only iPad is cheaper, is because Apple wouldn't let AT&T subsidize and brand (i.e. AT&T logo) the iPad. The opposite is true for the Xoom. Not to mention the fact that Moto will have additional costs in marketing/selling a Wi-Fi only version themselves.

apple ipad in the uk 16 gig is 420 pounds. Remember the 720 includes VAT which we don't have to pay in the US.

This is my worry. Ipad prices are significantly cheaper. It is going to make competing harder with prices like that.

Yeah, sales tax in all the US states is nowhere near 20%. Even subtracting this it is pricey!

I posted this in a different thread, but I'll post it here too. I don't think that is an accurate price. I believe that price includes the case, dock, etc. (SOURCE)

Motorola Xoom Android Honeycomb tablet pre-order

Handtec has the Motorola Xoom available for

Sadly I think this is the price of the pad. I believe they are saying that the website includes the prices of the accessories rather than the accessories are included in the price. Based on this I think $599.99 is a reasonable assumption for the US. Also a reasonable price. We always get screwed in the UK

Catch there will be a price-point premium, since Verizon WANTS you to get suckered into a contract. Expect to pay at least $150 more than the device is worht, since Verizon's business model expects some margin from contracts- regardless if you got one or not.

Why do folks think phones are so overpriced? Same reason. You are paying a premium to bypass a contract.

This device spanks the Notion, so probably a lot of pre-order folks gnashing of teeth at the moment. Especially with shipment delays. By the time they actually get the device, Xoom may be near shipping ;)

Xoom must be shipping early next month if Motorola expects to sell 800K in Q1. No possible way to NOT ship in less than a month from now. Motorola are talking smack, they are talking sell-in only (to Verizon purchasing), or the device releases less than a month from now.

I personally never expected Honeycomb to be ready by CES, and I don't expect the Xoom to ship early next month. I have always kinda figured it would ship immediately after Mobile World Congress (2/14-2/17). I think Google will unveil Honeycomb there (to the public and media). Google is obviously an exhibitor.

Back to price, I still don't think Verizon is banking on data. If that was the case, they would be requiring data plans with the Galaxy Tab and iPad. The fact is, if they want to sell "in bulk", they will have month-to-month data plans only, allowing buyers from every carrier to pick up the Xoom. Those people will pay for one month of data ($20/1GB, $35/3GB, $50/5GB, $80/10GB), and they'll be stupid not to at least give it a whirl for the 30 days they paid for. They may cancel the data on their Xoom after that 30 days, but in that 30 days, they'll probably also see how much better the coverage was compared to their T-Mobile, Sprint, AT&T, or whichever service they have their phone contract on.

That would be the smart stradegy. They'll sell a hell of a lot of Xooms, and possibly attract customers once it's all said and done. Not to mention the fact that they'll seriously bulk up their mailing list.

Hard to argue that. Sounds about right to me.

Then NO WAY Motorola ships 800K to Verizon, yet alone consumers in Q1. Not possbile, so Moto is talking smack they can not back up- which is my point.

Unless they dropship 800K to Verizon on 3/31 ;) That would be sell-in and not to us folks (consumers).

BTW, if you cancel the data, that is no different than cancelling service for a phone. Unless something falls through the cracks, you will have to pay full-price or return the device.

I will only get Xoom if offered at Best Buy (long term financing). At this point I do not care if it comes out as WiFi only. When my GF got her iPad, she had the choice of WiFi only and we agreed it would not hurt to have the 3G in it, considering you only had to get 1 month, and after that could cancel. When we went to Vegas, we re-activated for one month, then canceld as it was better than tethering, and not wasting cell battery.

So if I can get a 3G with only month-to-month (first month req'd) at Best Buy, I am in.

Not true for month-to-month plans. For instance, with the Galaxy Tab, there is nothing other than "full price" with month-to-month data on Verizon. No contracts whatsoever, cancel at any time and just use Wi-Fi. In that case, Verizon has obviously built-in some level of profit margin into the price of the device, even though their price (w/o contract) was cheaper than any other carrier since they introduced the Galaxy Tab on their network.
