Have you seen the back of BB discount coupons? In summary... it basically says coupon is valid for all electronic purchases except electronics that are sold at best buy. :p

Yeah, I laughed pretty hard at this. It's true, and it's frustrating for customers and employees. Though I must admit, I've seen people save some good money using those on the specific things listed.

Advertising a higher price placeholder is dumb when you are trying to drum up pre-order interest for a new product. Now, I wont even go to the store, make a couple small impulse purchases, etc.

I'm obviously not going to pay a down payment if I don't know what the final cost will be.

Hopefully they have this corrected well before the 17th (or 24th). Today would be ideal!

Few calls and emails later, and the page is down. I think they knew they screwed up before someone tipped them off though :)

As you can see now, there is no mention at all of the xoom on the best buy website. Prepare for some news this week though!

It drives me crazy when Android fans sit here and compare the price of the Xoom to a one year old iPad with 1/4 the ram 1/3 the processing power, lower screen res 1/2 the sensors as if the price should be competitive.

Wake up!!!

Also there is no indication that any of the competitor tabs will be any cheaper.

I am right there with you, the price is what Motorola thinks it will sell at. They wouldn't set a price that they think no one would buy it at. They are a business and sales affect them tremendously.

As a consumer, I think the price is high for me, so I will wait a little while to see what the wifi version cost. Plus, I can't get the 3g version without leaving the state, and it will be the end of March before I do that. That will give me plenty of time to read reviews and make a decision.

the early adopters will pick this up at any sane price, moto knows this and they are banking on those early adopters to get the machine, blog about it all over tweet and crackbook along with the standard web reviewers, then spring time the rest will jump on .. by then there will be a promo going on (add an accessory or two included) and the wifi only model may have some traction by then...

Ping!

That was the sound of you hitting the nail on the head

lmao so true, they exclude so much crap its not funny

It's funny you should mention the Best buy Coups. I just got mine today that are good for the 16th through the 22nd. Only accessories would be covered by these coupons. Gotta love coups!

Even the early adopters are INSANE if they pay $800+ for this device. I was just as anxious to get the Xoom since CES (just like everyone else I believe). When the initial price of $800 was announced, I could not believe it. I paid $500 for my laptop last Sept. and will NOT pay more than that for a Tablet that is no where as fast. Here is the laptop I purchased for comparison (15.6 Acer Aspire Laptop PC, AMD/Blu-ray/Windows 7 - Walmart.com) I am not an Apple hater or fanboy (I have the iPod Touch 3rd Gen) BUT they sure know what they are doing in the tablet market. The iPad2 will be a very good device and IF they come in with ANOTHER WiFi unit for $500 they will once again run away with the tablet market this year. I am thinking of just getting a Nook Color and rooting it with Honeycomb. These Android Tablet makers are Crazy to charge this much money, WHEN THE OS IS FREE. They have put no development into the OS. Pure greed. You CAN'T beat Apple if you come in at a higher price point with the general public.

And do you really think the iPad 2 will be at a different price point than the current iPad? If it is that would be a break from normal apple pricing stratagies. And the specs should be very close to the xoom.

I'm really getting sick of posts like this... This isn't a personal attack on you, but coming into the "xoom" area and bitching about the price has run its course with me.

First of all this isn't a laptop, so to compare it to one is silly. It's a hybrid of two ways of thinking mobility, and computing power in a slim form factor. It's going be a long time before this new technology is up to par with things like laptops, and desktops.

Second the xoom is 70 dollars more than its iPad "rival" but comes with cameras, tablet OS, 3x ram, and stronger CPU just to name a FEW. So what your saying is that's not worth 70 more dollars to have? 500 dollars gets you a Samsung galaxy tab, or a wifi only 16GB iPad. The point I'm making is that's the price point these devices are at right now, and has nothing to do with moto pricing of there device. They are right in line with current trending.

Third, they don't have to beat apple. This has been all over the place, and it's got be one the dumbest things I've heard. Why, why, why do they have to BEAT apple!? They can't share the same market? Does Honda have to beat Toyota to be successful? The answer is no, they can both have great success in there business sharing the same market.

Truth be told to me there competition isn't apple. Moto is fighting to be the best ANDROID platform provider among companies like HTC, and Samsung. Those are the guys they need to worry about because they are using the same OS. They need to differentiate themselves from people using the same OS as them. Apple will always have its followers just like android, and to convert people is a hard thing. It's not so hard to convert an android user from lets say HTC to Samsung if that company is offering better hardware, and better ecosystem for there device.

Also whenever this iPad 2 decides to show its face onto the market guess what moto has to do? Lower there price, and boom they are still staying competitive. Not only that, but since they were the only guys on street selling the top the line they put a lil extra change in there pockets while they could. Yeah you can buy a Nook and root it, but your also settling on a weaker product, but hey if that's what you can afford there is no shame in that.

/rant over.

I actually coming around to the $800 price tag as we speak. I *wish* it were cheaper, but I am coming to agree this thing is worth it.

And, I am considering not waiting for wifi only but getting the 3G model. I will not be activating it now but may want to consider it later.

I'm down to 3 devices I think. The Xoom. The Toshiba once I know their price point. and possibly the HTC. Not excited by the newly announced Flyer spec's in comparison to Xoom

Hence the parts don't cost as much as a laptop. Why should something that does less, cost the same or more?

It does have to do with Moto's pricing. Even if they pay a 100% markup for parts from what Apple pays, they're still taking in like $300 profit. The Xoom does not cost $699 to make. It should cost like $500 to make (assuming the 100% markup from Apple's prices). Hence any selling price over $500 is purely because thats the amount of profit Motorola wants. Not because of market forces.

Third, they don't have to beat apple. This has been all over the place, and it's got be one the dumbest things I've heard. Why, why, why do they have to BEAT apple!? They can't share the same market? Actually they do have to beat Apple. To say otherwise is one of the dumbest things I've ever heard. What you mean to say is they don't have to defeat Apple. Because how do they share the market with Apple without beating Apple and taking some of its share of the market? Ipad has like 95% of the market. Apple isn't simply going to give up part of that simply because Motorola wants to get in on it. Hence Motorola has to have customers believe not only that their product is better, but also superior to the Apple offering since they're pricing it higher. Problem is to the average buyer (who is not represented on these forums), they most likely won't be able to do that. The Xoom will not offer a superior experience to most people even if they have hands on with both the Ipad and Xoom. So they'll look at price, see the Xoom priced higher and get the Ipad.

Truth be told to me there competition isn't apple. Moto is fighting to be the best ANDROID platform provider among companies like HTC, and Samsung. Ipad has 95% market share in tablets. So yes Apple is their competition. But here you twist yourself. Yes it wont be hard to get an average user to switch from HTC to Samsung based on offers. But what will get the average customer to go from a cheaper Ipad, which has more models to fit their need, to the more expensive Xoom which has only 1 choice? Better specs do not always mean better experience to the average user. PLus Ipad is not just some piece of tech on the shelf. Apple has been able to advertise it up to the gold standard. That is what any other tab maker is going against.

Also whenever this iPad 2 decides to show its face onto the market guess what moto has to do? Lower there price, and boom they are still staying competitive. Not only that, but since they were the only guys on street selling the top the line they put a lil extra change in there pockets while they could. You could also buy an Adam or Gtablet and not really have a weaker product outside of Honeycomb. Both have the Tegra 2 processor which is whats going to drive most user experiences. Yet neither is close to $800. Is the user experience of the Xoom really double either of those two? To most the answer will be no. Heck whatever advantage Honeycomb bestows upon the Xoom will be able to be on either of those tablets as well.

I agree completely with melantus in his, not so much of a rant, but a "truth teaching." I mean, seriously, the Xoom is really no more expensive than the "best" iPad and you are getting SOO much more out of the Xoom not too mention you can add up to 32 GB to the memory, let's see and iPad do that!

Yes the price is high and yes at the moment there isn't a WiFi only version being mentioned in any ads BUT we know there is one coming so if it is too high, dont buy it and wait. Personally I think it is just a case of impatience on most peoples part because they KNOW the Xoom is worth the money but nothing is going to be out at the same time to match it that is cheaper. If you dont want to pay $800, dont. Be patient people!

I don't think you're going to have the choice not to activate it. Activation/activating wifi is going to cost you $55. $35 activation fee, $20 for the lowest 1 month pan Verizon will have for it (which is required for wifi activation, so says Best Buy). In my area that makes the Xoom come out to over $900 ($913, 7.5% sales tax) with taxes and activation.

They cost more because right now tablets are luxury items. There is a premium for these products whether you like it or not, or if it makes "sense". Last I checked moto is a business, and they are around to make money. This part the real world. Mark up on goods happens on everything it's all part of business. Don't think your getting a far shake fine, there are plenty of other choices as you've stated. We will find out soon enough if moto has done the right thing or not. I'm not going sit here and speculate as how much X cost to make.

I guess this really has do with what you define as "beat". If we are saying they need hold 60% of tablets and apple has 40% (just using a for instance here) does that mean beat? I'm sure it does, but I don't see that realistically happening for any company anytime soon. Apple WILL lose some of this market, they were the only ones playing in it before. The question is how much will moto come away with, and how much do they need to call it success for themselves. What I'm getting at is apple can still be top dog, and if moto is second I bet there going be pretty happy about that. If your second you can't make the claim that you've beat apple, but I'm sure your making a lot money.

Again this isn't taking into effect what you've also stated there are plenty of android tablets offering a similar user experience. I believe that is more of a threat to moto than apple. Like said before moto is fighting more so for android consumers than apple I think. Moto has made the choice to play in the top tier tablet market. Moto has also made the choice to not offer a tier product. So with that being said don't expect to pay 500 for a tablet that's not trying to compete in that part of market. I haven't heard good things about the Adam, and G slate I haven't heard a price, so how you know it won't be more than your 500 dollar mark?

Well you are 100% wrong. Android has already beat Apple in the cell phone arena at the same or higher prices and is about to do the same in the tablet arena.

This is about the best "Android Tablet" not tablet in general. As we did in the cell phone arena Android will dominate and Moto will offer the best Android Tablet currently on the market.

Victory will be ours!

motorola marketing strategy has worked..

its like that annoying pop song you hear on the radio... you hate listening to it.. however the stations put it in heavy rotation and eventually, you end up saying "eh.. it does not sound too bad..." :D

I actually coming around to the $800 price tag as we speak. I *wish* it were cheaper, but I am coming to agree this thing is worth it.

you had a very compelling response however how can you say with such certainty that MOST people will not have a superior experience with the xoom? how can anyone say they will have any kind of experience with the product? its not yet released to the masses... :(

...The Xoom will not offer a superior experience to most people even if they have hands on with both the Ipad and Xoom.

I'd like to know (for those who say the Xoom is too much $$$) what do you think the Samsung 10.1 will cost? I mean if we already know the Galaxy Tab is @ $599 MRSP.

I guess I meant "keep" the activation. I know I have to pay 1 month. Fine, I'll play with it for 29 days and then cancel it. Some day I may turn it back on.

Ha! I thought about that as I was typing my earlier response. Yes - the $1200 fake out worked quite well. It only took me 2 days to rethink the $800 price tag. Great Job to Motorola and Best Buy on tricking me.
:D

I think I prefer to think of it as coming to reason. The Xoom looks like it rocks. Why the heck would I buy an iPad of similar price but half the features? The Toshiba looks almost identical to the Xoom - just waiting to hear about their pricing before I make a choice.

activation fee is one time. You pay it, and that after that your only paying for your data package. So even if you cancel your data you will not be required to pay an activation fee to start it back up.

To me? Nothing. If I recall - the 10.1 inch Samsung has no ports. No GPS. No expandable memory (not sure on this one). But basically - if I recall the 10 inch galaxy is no where near as good as the Xoom.

Of course - the new one is worth something. Just not for me. I *WANT* the ports and GPS and all the other stuff. So the Galaxy is not a consideration for me.

In the release date thread there is a post by a BB Mobile employee who said that if you cancel the service in the first three days you dont have to pay an activation fee or for the first months data.
