Help PRL & Profile Update Problem

Hi, first post on the thread. Yay.

I have a Nexus S 4G on Sprint, still stock, no root, etc.

When I try to run the PRL and Profile update it says it needs to place a special call.

With the PRL update, the phone calls, beeps, then returns to the lock screen like it crashed or something.

With the Profile update, it calls, beeps then says there was an error or does the same thing as the PRL update.

Given, I'm trying this in a coffee shop with a rather poor signal, but I'm just curious:

Has anyone been able to complete either process and what does this do?

I've heard it was supposed to improve reception.

If your phone is new did you get the Google GRJ22 update?
That might be the problem. And yes PRL updates do help reception.
Keep trying it will go.

I am indeed already on GRJ22. I called Sprint and was informed that they'd recently had a series of data related issues that probably led to this issue. The Sprint rep helped me reprogram my phone and manually updated both PRL and Profile.

Apparently, when there is a data issue when you change towers it can chase this as your phone falls "out of sync" with the network.
