Root problem after 2.2 update (help)

ok so the phone was rooted and last night I did the ota update to 2.2 it looked like the update went fine. but after the phone rebooted it seems to be in a loop saying
process system is not responding
if I push force close the phone vibrates and then I get the message
the process com.google.process.gapps has stopped unexpectedly. please try again
I push force close and again it vibrates and starts all over the the error message again.
I called Verizon and they want me to do a factory restore. I sure hate to wipe the phone and loose everything.
is there anything I can do or try before doing a restore?

NOTE: It seems the link does do a reflash of your phone so you will lose everything. I'd rather lose everything and have a working phone than a piece of looping crap.
