Help Problem connecting to home Wi-Fi

Barnoe

Lurker
I have a Speedtouch router supplying a wireless connection to my house
my son has a HTC Wildfire S

He got the phone for Christmas and its been a problem the whole time.

IF i give the phone a static IP and use my ISP DNS settings it works

but then obviously, when he goes to friends or anywhere else the Wi-Fi wont work because its looking for the gateway we have at home

IF i give it a static IP and use googles DNS 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 i can browse but the Android Market wont load and Apps wont work

How can i get it to connect auto?
we have 2 IPhones, 2 Laptops and an Ipod in the house and all connect auto without any settings needing altering?

I know some people will just say, set it up with my ISP setting and tell him not to use it on any other Wi-Fi but at home.

But he should be able to use it at Wi-Fi hotspots and friends... if he cant then i see no alternative but to sell the phone and get something that can

Any help is appreciated

It hasn't been a problem with mine. I have a Netgear router and I just gave the phone my home login and password and it connects as soon as it's in range and if I turn the router off, it automatically connects to my next-door neighbour's network. Anywhere else it connects to any open network as soon as there is sufficient signal. I can also connect to The Cloud if I enter my password.

I certainly never gave it any IPS or DNS settings, I don't even know what they mean. The only setting I have ticked is Notify me when an open network is available. I just went into advanced settings and found an option to use static IP. Mine is not ticked and nor is DLNA auto-IP.

I'm sorry I can't help you more but hopefully someone else will be able to.

What you describe is how it should work, ive tried many different settings

I must be over looking something

UPDATE
After searching on google it would seem its a common problem with owners of a Speedtouch router?

Has your son tried to connect to any different router through the normal way? If it can automatically connect to a different wifi , then the problem is definitely your router

You might be right. My first router was a Speedtouch and it took me 2 hours on the phone to support before I could get it to connect to my laptop. When I replaced it with the Netgear I just plugged it in, followed the on-screen instructions and off I went.
