Problem with an update

I have a problem with an update. it seems to break my phone whenever I apply this update. 'm not sure which update it is.

My phone has been "bricked" like this twice. I've updated to 2.1 without any problems, then another update comes. First time i installed it and it broke my phone. So i had to install the 1.5 rom from htc.com and patch my way back. 2nd time i was out jogging with it in my pocket, and somehow it managed to install the update by itself.

What I'm wondering is; does anyone have the same problem? Is there a way to perhaps install a later update that fixes this? Can i somehow tell my phone to never ask if i want that update?

So you have 2.1? Does it install after downloading from wifi or via network?

I remember my version was 2.1 (update 1)

I think in the menu>about phone> Software update there is a tick box for auto search for updates (correct me If I'm wrong anyone) just untick that box.

Have you ever tried to root and Mod your Hero? I'm running a Mod 2.3.4 and the phone runs better than ever really. its pretty simple to do and its free. Just follow the sticky - how to.

I did once. it became very slow and sluggish. very annoying.
dont remember the name of the rom.
