Problem with Brightness

I did a search and didn't find this specific problem mentioned so here it goes.

The Eris in question (isn't mine but I'm trying to help the owner out), has of course, horrible battery issues. So, first thing I wanted to do was see if there was a built-in power-manager app like on the Motorola Droid. There wasn't so I downloaded one of the many brightness toggle widgets.

The first widget, when clicked brought up a small menu to select brightness. While that menu was up the brightness would change as it should have but would immediately change back to what it was when that menu closed.

After that I looked in options, disabled auto-brightness, and installed a new widget. This one is a simple press to change brightness in increments. When I push the button the brightness changes momentarily and then resets to whatever the slider in the Settings is at. I've tried moving that slider and that setting is what it always defaults to.

Right now the only way to adjust the brightness is in the settings menu and nothing else will work even though auto-brightness is turned off.

Is there any way around this? I'd really like to be able to get it so it can be easily adjusted without having to go through so many steps.

EDIT: Playing around with it further, I tapped the widget to go to 100% brightness and of course the screen dimmed back down to 0%. I then went to the settings menu and as soon as I entered the "Sound and Display" menu, the brightness jumped up to what I had set it at with the widget. After that I can hit the Home key or otherwise leave the menu and the brightness will be properly set... until the screen times out. If the screen times out and I wake it up, it's back to 0% brightness.

Yeah, I read that and already advised to let it run down and fully charge. But being able to adjust brightness would still help with conserving battery life.

I've noticed this issue as well. The same app on a friend's droid functions 100% perfectly, but on the eris it seems like I always have to go through the menu and toggle auto-brightness to get it to work.

I am glad I'm not the only one with this request. I would like to have low brightness in the car at night, but high brightness the rest of the time. I tried three different brightness toggle apps but they all experienced the issue described above - it works at first, but Sense puts the brightness back to the original setting right away. Hopefully someone will come out with a toggle soon that is compatible with Sense. It would be even better if it was PART of Sense - another settings toggle like wifi on/off - but that is too much to hope for...

I know I'm a little late to the conversation, but I've had the same problem with using brightness adjustments in Locale. It's really frustrating as it would be greatly beneficial to be able to automatically have the brightness all the way down at night and save some juice. Did you come up with any solutions?

I am using a workaround now that is okay for my purposes. I went into the settings and set the option so my Eris does not turn off if it is plugged in, since I have charging docks set up in my car and on my nightstand. If you set a really short screen timeout, that almost gives the effect we are looking for. The screen falls back to its lowest brightness when idle, and only brightens when I press a button. The other option that works for me is to turn the screen off and then back on again. The lock screen has a much shorter timeout than the main screen timeout, but you remain on the lock screen. That works okay for me because I can pause/next/prev from there when playing music. Other than simply going into settings and turning up/down the brightness the official way, I don't know of anything else that works...

I recall seeing screenshots of Sense on Android 2.x and I swear there was a brightness toggle widget now so maybe we'll get what we want then......whenever that is...

isn't this what auto brightness does? Why not just let the phone control it?

I am so relieved to see so many people having this same issue - that means it's not just my phone that's dysfunctional! I was getting so frustrated trying to use brightness settings in Timeriffic, and trying to control brightness using a brightness widget. Good to know it's not a problem with something I'm doing. Guess that's just another reason to look forward to the update.
