Help problem with contacts

I'm new to Android phones, and I've looked everywhere, but.can't seem to find.a fix for this. My problem is that whenever I add a new contact, it adds it as a gmail contact, and then I have to sync the contacts again, which normally doesnt add the contact anyway. I'm pretty sure it's doing this because I have my gmail synced to my phone. Is it possible to add a contact straight to the phones memory?

Google Contacts is not for everyone and not very intuitive.. but it works for me and I love having contacts sync'ed in the cloud when I ODIN my phone.
