Problem with Hero icons??

I'll refrain from updating Sky Map if it makes it start crashing. But I did update Flixster and now instead of "Movies" in the application list it says "Movie Lists" and no more popcorn icon, now it's a blue rectangle with a white triangle.
 
I've had many app updates and the only one I've actually had problems with is Google Sky Maps. It went to EULA after a reboot. I don't reboot often so I might just get the phone the way I want it and not reboot. I did have some change icons after an update but I just figured the developer changed the icon.
 
Well, I painstakingly troubleshot this issue today. No luck.

I formatted the SD card and the bad shortcut names came back.

I then did a hard reset and ran the stock Android home. Left it on stock while installing one app at a time from the marketplace. After each install, I would soft reset the phone. After about five apps (nothing crazy here), the same error occurred again. I know some people think its related to updating apps, but these were all new installs.

I'd just installed Google Listen, ran the app and got a "force close" message. Oddly enough, Google Listen did not crash. It continued running. When I manually closed out of the app, I noticed that three shortcuts had been renamed. At least this time it wasn't Dolphin Browser, but still very annoying. Strange that it affects different apps each time.

Also, unlike the first time this happened to me (running the NY Times App), Google Listen continued to work instead of throwing "force quit" errors. Either way, I uninstalled Google Listen and the apps with renamed shortcuts and then reinstalled a couple of them. The names are still wrong!

This has taken hours to do (in my spare time while at work) and I'm still no closer to finding a solution. I'm back to running HTC Sense since stock Android didn't help. And I reinstalled my normal set of apps all at once instead of one at a time. No additional problems for now.

I truly hope they sort this out. While not exactly a deal breaker, it is very annoying.

As an aside, does anyone know how to manually edit the name displayed for a shortcut? I wonder if that'd be possible until a fix is pushed to us.
 
I experience this problem when installing apps from an SD card. Just use Anycut to create the shortcut. Then you can name it whatever you want and it won't change.

Thanks James. I'd tried Anycut briefly before, but it seems buggy. I'm able to create a new shortcut, but the option to edit an existing one (even one I'd made with the app) doesn't work for me. It just sits there without showing any shortcuts to edit. I did use it to create a shortcut I needed so it is still useful. Thanks again!
 
For that past few days I thought my Google Voice icon was gone from my apps list. Turns out it's just renamed to voicemail_configuration_key. My Meebo shortcut reverted to the long file name as well. I've used any cut to add these to one of my home screens with the correct names but this is getting frustrating.

Has anyone been able to get Google Sky Maps working correctly. With Google Voice I was able to go into Market, My Downloads and launch it from there but with Sky Maps it would just force close. The Sky Maps issue happens after it's been installed and the phone is powered off and back on and it shows the EULA.

The answers from HTC were:

1. Based on the information you have provided I would suggest placing your Hero into Safe Mode and removing the applications on your device..................... If the following steps do not work to resolve your issue, then your Hero will have to be reset back to factory settings.

and

2. Since the applications you have described did not come on the Android Operating System. I would have to suggest contacting the developer of the application to obtain more information to see if there is an update for the application. Also research information at Android | Official Website to see if any other users are having issues with these applications. You can also research information at HTC Smartphone Wiki - HTC to find out more information from other online users.
 
Poo on the HTC support response about this, but it's likely a scripted response - maybe when they see removing the boot-cache clears up the issue they'll take a second look. I have to hope at least one of their developers is following the 'root' scene.
 
I had a ticket open with HTC for the problems with Google Sky Map and other programs breaking after a reboot. They couldn't reproduce the issue on their end. Forwarded them these links to them. Thanks!

It will continue to be an issue until HTC fixes their caching code to work with the installer. Until then you will have to clear out the old cache remnants each and every time you update an existing app.

Yeah, I just wanted people to know that rooting isn't the end all answer. It does allow you to temporarily fix it but that you will have to keep on it until HTC fixes it. I myself am holding off on rooting unless I start seeing a lot more apps doing this. I just want to see HTC acknowledge this new issue so they can start working on a fix.
 
After updating iMusic, it has been renamed "Scanning SD card...", and the icon has disappeared. I thought at first it just said this because it was actually scanning, but that doesnt seem to be the case. I actually had no idea where it came from until I figured out iMusic was gone. The app still works though.
 
I have 4 apps that keep reseting the name and even have some functionality broken, the 4 apps I did an update on. Since this wonderful experience, I simply uninstall any app with an update and then reinstall the newer version. Issue is gone with all other apps.

The simplest way to do an update is...

- Get update notification (be aware that apps that have the name issue will always say there is an update even when there isn't one)
- Launch "Market"
- Go to "My Downloads"
- One at a time, uninstall any app that says update available
- When list refreshes, the app will still be listed. Just select it and install.

Just wanted to update with my current experiences:

A week or so ago, I did a factory reset on my Hero. I went through the initial settings you have to do and then immediately turned off the Hero Sense UI and chose to use the stock Android UI by default. Well, yesterday, after I had updated a few apps (pandora, handcent, where), I decided to do a test and reset the phone, thinking to myself that I was confident that nothing would go wrong. Well, handcent and where had broken icons and upon running pandora, I noticed that the version number that I updated to didn't match the version number that it stated while it was running.

So, there is something amiss here. There were reports that doing a reset and switching UIs would solve the problem. I have just found evidence that it doesn't. Is this still a HTC issue? Not sure at this point. Are there underlying HTC things going on in the background to handle package management & display even if you aren't using the Sense UI? Maybe, maybe not. But, since this isn't happening on non-Hero devices, it makes me think HTC is doing something in the background that is causing some applications to cause problems.

Thoughts?
 
It is most likely due to some change HTC made to android - even without Rosie (SenseUI) running, there's still a lot of HTC binaries running in the background.

All signs point to a mishandling of the cache files that get created when the phone is booted - it seems to me that this cache is not always getting updated when apps are updated / installed, and the interface is built on this cache (for speed).

I'm really hoping it's fixed in the upcoming bugfix release. At the very least, this shouldn't be a problem in 2.0
 
Wanted to add my 2 cents here too.

I have all of the issues listed and they piss me off to no end.

The following apps are now named with their Java app name (for ex, com.p1.chompsms): Unit Converter (FCs upon start), Astro File Manager, Estos, ChompSMS, Voice Caller ID, WP To Go. They slowly turned this way, one by one.

The following apps have their icon squished or otherwise mutilated: Remember The Milk (narrow red line) and Flixster (which now FCs upon start).

The following app keeps telling me the shortcut has been removed and doesn't want to start, after every app update: Twidroid. It even says so when I'm trying to start it from the apps list. The only way I can make it work is by going to the Market, clicking My downloads.

What. The. ****.
