Help problem with sound on outgoing call.

I'm new to Android and to these forums. I've tried searching and haven't found an answer to this. Every time I make a call I can't hear anything from the phone and no one can hear me. Only way I can hear anything is to switch to speaker. Haven't had a problem yet when anyone calls me though. Any suggestions? Almost seems like the phone thinks a headset is plugged in to me.
